Sailing Together, Side by Side: A Historic Sibling Bond at the Helm of India’s Warships

What’s it like when a brother and sister command separate Navy ships at the same time? Discover the inspiring story of the Deosthalee siblings!
Indian Masterminds Stories

For the first time in Indian naval history, a sister-brother duo, Commander Prerna Deosthalee and Commander Ishan Deosthalee are simultaneously at the helms of two warships. Prerna commands INS Trinkat, a fast attack craft, while her younger brother Ishan leads INS Vibhuti, a formidable Veer-class missile ship. This dual command marks a significant achievement, not only for the siblings but for the Indian Navy, spotlighting familial bonds, national service, and their love for the sea.

CHARTING NEW WATERS TOGETHER

Growing up in a close-knit family, Prerna and Ishan were raised with a strong sense of purpose. Born and raised in Mumbai, they grew up in a household where discipline, commitment, and a love for the sea were central values. Their parents, both accomplished professionals, nurtured a passion for the sea and adventure in their children from an early age.

Coming from a naval family, both siblings were naturally drawn to the sea from a young age. Encouraged by their parents to pursue their passions, they found themselves united by a common dream of serving in the Indian Navy. Their shared upbringing, filled with stories of courage and honour from the maritime world, not only shaped their careers but also strengthened the bond between them, a bond that today sails through the vast, uncharted waters of the Indian Navy.

As young children, the siblings would often sit on the beach, watching ships on the horizon, imagining what it might be like to be aboard one of those vessels, steering it through the waves.

For Prerna, the path to the Navy was clear early on. Determined to break barriers, she pursued her dream with fierce commitment. By the time she joined the Navy, her little brother Ishan was captivated by her stories and the sense of duty that seemed to emanate from her very being. Inspired, Ishan followed in her footsteps, bringing his own dreams to the family’s nautical legacy.

A SHARED VOYAGE ACROSS THE HIGH SEAS

Prerna and Ishan’s naval journeys have been unique, yet deeply intertwined. Prerna carved her name in history last year, as the first woman officer to command a naval ship. Her achievement ignited hope and pride not just for her family but for women across the country. Ishan, on the other hand, recently took command of INS Vibhuti, a move that marks the first instance of siblings commanding Indian Navy ships at the same time.

The two ships under their command, though vastly different in structure and purpose, serve complementary roles under the Indian Navy’s Western Command. While Prerna’s INS Trinkat is agile and swift, designed for fast-attack missions, Ishan’s INS Vibhuti, armed with missiles, commands a powerful presence in the fleet. This alignment of their professional roles echoes the bond they’ve shared since childhood—a shared sense of purpose, yet each unique in approach and strength.

STEERING THEIR SHIPS TO NEW HEIGHTS

Recently, INS Vibhuti sailed in a steam-past event attended by President Droupadi Murmu. Watching Ishan command his ship in the President’s presence, Prerna was filled with pride. For Ishan, the sight of his sister breaking barriers and making history has always been a source of inspiration, and he draws strength from her determination.

In quiet moments, they both reflect on their shared path. It is not just the thrill of commanding warships that binds them, but the realization that they are each other’s most trusted allies, mentors, and champions. Together, they have redefined the possibilities for siblings and for officers in the Indian Navy.

SETTING SAIL INTO THE FUTURE—TOGETHER

Their parents could hardly have imagined that both their children would rise to such positions, shoulder to shoulder. But for Prerna and Ishan, their achievements represent the culmination of a dream they shared, one born in childhood and strengthened by a life of mutual support and encouragement. Today, they not only serve their country with honour but inspire a generation of young dreamers to chart their own paths.

As Prerna and Ishan sail forward on their respective ships, they carry with them a unique legacy—a bond that transcends the bounds of family, merging into the vast, uncharted seas of duty, honour, and kinship.
