Indian Masterminds Stories

In the world of wildlife conservation and management, few experiences rival the electrifying thrill of a tiger sighting. For those dedicated to preserving these majestic predators, such moments become both a professional milestone and a deeply personal memory. Each encounter with a tiger is a testament to the raw beauty and unpredictability of nature, as well as the delicate balance required to protect these magnificent creatures.

In this special story by Indian Masterminds on International Tiger’s Day, we delve into the awe-inspiring and heart-stopping stories of seasoned Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers who have had the privilege of coming face-to-face with our national animal.

A Childhood Confrontation with The Majesty: Retd. IFS Dr. DN Pandey

Retired IFS officer Dr. DN Pandey’s bond with the jungle was forged in his childhood. Growing up in Satna, with the wild realms of Panna and Bandhavgarh just a breath away, he often ventured into the forests with his grandfather, an Ayurvedic doctor seeking medicinal herbs. This frequent communion with nature familiarized young Pandey with its myriad creatures. Yet, no encounter matched the awe of facing the striped majesty of a tiger.

Dr. DN Pandey

One day, at the tender age of eleven, he accompanied his grandfather deep into the jungle. Confidently leading the way, Pandey rounded a bend and froze. Just ahead, a tigress played with her two cubs. Time seemed to stop. Panic surged, but his grandfather’s calm voice urged him to stay still. Running was futile; the tigress had already spotted them.

For over half an hour, they stood rooted, hearts pounding, watching the tigress and her cubs. The only weapon they had was a stick, laughably inadequate against such a powerful predator. Their patience wavered, but the tigress remained unbothered, her cubs frolicking around her.

Finally, unable to wait any longer, they decided to retreat. Turning their backs was too risky. Inch by inch, they stepped backward, never breaking eye contact, praying the tigress would let them leave in peace. Their hearts raced until the jungle swallowed their retreating figures, leaving behind an indelible memory of raw wilderness and survival.

The Thrilling Adventures of a Tiger Sighting: IFS officer Harshakumar Chikkanaragund

My first encounter with a tiger was in 2019, during training at Kabini Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR). Seeing the majestic beast in the wild for the first time left me speechless. I sensed the forest whispering the presence of a carnivore nearby and instructed the driver to stop and wait in silence. Suddenly, without a sound, the tiger emerged onto the jeep road. Our vehicle erupted with excitement and awe. When I recounted this to my fellow trainees, they were skeptical, as no other vehicle had reported a sighting that day.

Recently, a tiger strayed from the forest near Kabini’s backwater, taking shelter in farmland. The low-lying horticulture crops made tracking and capturing it a formidable challenge. Our staff observed its movements from a distance, noting the tiger was sound asleep with minimal disturbance. We decided to surround the farmland, ensuring the safety of residents by keeping them at a safe distance.

Leading the team from the outside, we soon located the tiger. The tranquilizer was ready, and the doctor aimed. In a heartbeat, the tiger awoke, charging towards us with a ferocious growl. The adrenaline rush was electrifying, pure horror coursing through my veins. Thankfully, the farmland’s fencing forced the tiger to change direction. After several tense attempts, we finally captured and safely released the tiger back into the wild.

This was just one of many rescue operations I’ve led. Our team once rescued two tigers in a single day from different locations, a first in the country’s tiger reserves. Each operation is a testament to our dedication and the relentless spirit required to protect these magnificent creatures.

A Heart-Stopping Moment: IFS Officer L Krishnamoorthy

Two or three years ago, IFS officer Mr. L. Krishnamoorthy, field director of Satpura Tiger Reserve, embarked on a routine patrol with his staff and a driver. It was mid-morning, around 10:30-11, when they decided to leave their jeep and explore on foot for a short distance. About 500-700 meters from their vehicle, they reached a steep, shallow stream they intended to cross to explore the opposite side of the jungle.

As they approached the edge to gauge if the vehicle could pass, they were met with a startling sight—a tigress lounging just a few feet away, completely unaware of their presence due to the still air. The proximity, a mere 2-3 feet, left them both frozen in shock. Time stood still as they locked eyes with the majestic predator. Fear gripped them, knowing escape was impossible. Suddenly, the tigress sprang into action, leaping—but, to their immense relief, she jumped to the opposite side of the stream, leaving them unharmed yet profoundly shaken by the close encounter.

A Dramatic Encounter Between a Tusker and a Tiger: IFS Officer Dr. P Ramesh

During my Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Wildlife Management from the Wildlife Institute of India, we visited Nagarhole Tiger Reserve for a module on “Writing Tiger Conservation Plans.” As part of our field training, we ventured into the Damankatte tourism area. Near a waterhole called Nayanjikatte Kere, we encountered a lone male tusker bathing serenely. Suddenly, the tranquility shattered as the elephant bolted from the waterhole, trumpeting in fear.

Our eyes widened as we spotted the cause—a tiger, perfectly camouflaged in the nearby bush. The majestic stripes and glowing eyes of the tiger filled us with awe. The elephant, terrified, trumpeted loudly and mock-charged at the tiger, which remained surprisingly calm, waiting for its turn to drink. Eventually, the tusker’s aggressive pursuit forced the tiger to retreat, depriving us of further sightings. Witnessing this dramatic encounter between two of nature’s giants was a thrilling, unforgettable experience.

My First Tiger Sighting in Kanha Tiger Reserve: Senior IFS officer Ramesh Pandey

During my probation in 1997-98, I experienced my first wild tiger sighting in Kanha Tiger Reserve during a field tour. We were on the back of a patrolling elephant, traversing the dense forest when we stumbled upon a young tigress, slumbering contentedly after a morning kill. The mahout, an experienced hand, guided the elephant closer to the majestic predator.

There she lay, her striking stripes blending seamlessly with the grassy forest floor. For nearly ten minutes, we watched in awe, barely daring to breathe. Suddenly, the tigress lifted her head and fixed us with an intense, piercing gaze. The elephant, sensing her displeasure, raised its trunk and exhaled forcefully. Recognizing the signs, we silently retreated, leaving the tigress to her peaceful siesta.

Returning to the rest house, we couldn’t shake the thrill of the encounter. The aftermath, the lingering excitement, and the adrenaline proved more exhilarating than the sighting itself. That unforgettable moment remains vividly etched in my memory.
