Mumbai: Bank of India has informed the stock exchanges that S&P Global Ratings has assigned the bank a ‘BBB’ long-term issuer credit rating and an ‘A-2’ short-term issuer credit rating, with a stable outlook on the long-term rating.

The ratings were assigned by S&P Global Ratings on September 7, 2026. The agency cited Bank of India’s adequate capitalisation, strong funding profile and healthy liquidity position as key factors supporting its credit profile.

Bank of India Credit Rating Details

S&P Global Ratings has assigned the following issuer credit ratings to Bank of India:

  • Long-term issuer credit rating: BBB
  • Short-term issuer credit rating: A-2
  • Outlook on long-term rating: Stable

Government Support Strengthens Bank of India Rating

S&P said the rating also reflects a very high likelihood of extraordinary government support for Bank of India, if required.

The agency highlighted the bank’s role as a public sector lender and the Indian government’s majority ownership and control of the bank as evidence of strong links between the two.

S&P also noted Bank of India’s important role in promoting financial inclusion, particularly through expanding access to deposits and credit.

The bank’s long-term rating is one notch above S&P’s assessment of its stand-alone credit profile, reflecting the potential benefit of government support.

Strong Funding and Liquidity Support Credit Profile

According to S&P, Bank of India’s creditworthiness is supported by its adequate capitalisation, solid funding profile and healthy liquidity position.

The agency particularly highlighted:

  • A solid deposit franchise.
  • High customer confidence associated with the bank’s government ownership.
  • Ample liquidity.
  • Sufficient capitalisation to support future credit growth.

These factors are expected to continue supporting the bank’s overall credit profile.

Stable Outlook Over Next Two Years

S&P Global Ratings expects Bank of India to maintain an adequate capital position, strong funding and healthy liquidity over the next two years.

The agency expects the bank’s capital position to remain sufficient to support credit growth above the banking industry average, which could provide further support to its credit profile.

Profitability and Asset Quality Remain Key Areas

While assigning the ratings, S&P also identified some areas where Bank of India continues to lag industry averages.

The agency flagged:

  • Profitability
  • Asset quality

S&P expects Bank of India to make improvements in risk management and asset quality over the next two years.
