BEML Inaugurates Central Research Facility at IISc Bengaluru to Shape the Future of Advanced Engineering and Mobility

Bengaluru: In a major step towards strengthening India’s innovation ecosystem and advancing indigenous technology development, BEML Limited has inaugurated its Central Research Facility (CRF) at the campus of Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru.

Established at the iHub-Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development (FSID), the facility is envisioned as BEML’s flagship research hub dedicated to developing next-generation technologies, accelerating breakthrough innovations, and creating solutions for emerging challenges across strategic and industrial sectors.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in BEML’s transformation from a manufacturing-led organization into a research-driven technology enterprise focused on future-ready solutions.

Facility Inaugurated by CMD Shantanu Roy

The Central Research Facility was inaugurated by Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Limited.

The event was attended by:

  • B. Gurumoorthy, Director, FSID-IISc
  • Om Prakash Subbarao, CEO, Core Labs-FSID-IISc
  • Functional Directors and senior leadership of BEML
  • Faculty members, researchers and students from IISc

The inauguration highlights the growing collaboration between industry and academia in advancing India’s scientific and technological capabilities.

BEML’s Apex Research Organization

The newly established Central Research Facility will function as BEML’s apex research organization, focusing on frontier technologies and long-term innovation.

The facility has been designed to:

  • Conduct blue-sky and exploratory research
  • Develop proof-of-concept projects
  • Build technology demonstrators
  • Undertake advanced modelling and simulations
  • Carry out testing and validation activities
  • Generate intellectual property through patents and publications
  • Support future product development and industrial innovation

Officials stated that CRF will help bridge the gap between laboratory research and real-world industrial applications.

The research agenda of the Central Research Facility spans multiple future-oriented technology domains.

Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems

The facility will explore advanced AI applications, machine learning, intelligent decision-making systems, and autonomous technologies for industrial and strategic applications.

Robotics and Intelligent Automation

Researchers will focus on developing advanced robotics solutions capable of improving efficiency, safety and productivity across industries.

Advanced Materials and Metallurgy

The partnership between BEML and IISc will operate through project-specific initiatives under an existing Master Research Agreement (MRA).

The collaboration framework includes:
