New Delhi: The Union Government is learnt to be considering another extension for Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Kumar Deka (IPS: 1988: Himachal Pradesh cadre), potentially allowing him to continue beyond June 30, 2026. If approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), it would mark a rare third consecutive extension for the veteran intelligence officer, underscoring the government’s emphasis on continuity in national security and internal intelligence management.
The move comes amid growing indications that the Narendra Modi-led government values stability in the country’s internal security architecture at a time of evolving security challenges, counter-terrorism operations, and regional security concerns.
Third Consecutive Extension Under Consideration
Tapan Kumar Deka assumed charge as the 28th Director of the Intelligence Bureau on July 1, 2022, succeeding Arvind Kumar.
He was initially appointed for a fixed two-year tenure ending on June 30, 2024. Subsequently, the government granted him:
- A one-year extension till June 30, 2025.
- A second one-year extension till June 30, 2026.
Now, with his current tenure nearing completion, the Centre is reportedly examining the possibility of extending his service for another year.
If approved, Deka would become one of the few Intelligence Bureau chiefs to receive three successive tenure extensions.

Government’s Trust in Deka’s Leadership
According to sources in bureaucratic and security circles, Deka continues to enjoy the confidence of the political leadership due to his extensive experience in counter-terrorism operations and domestic intelligence management.
Senior officials familiar with the functioning of the security establishment believe that Deka’s operational expertise and deep understanding of internal security issues have made him a key figure in India’s intelligence framework.
His role in overseeing intelligence assessments relating to terrorism, radicalisation, insurgency and sensitive regional security issues is widely acknowledged within security circles.
Succession Discussions May Be Deferred
Until recently, discussions regarding a possible successor had gathered momentum within bureaucratic and intelligence circles.
Among the names being considered for the top position were:
Rithwik Rudra
Currently serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau, Rudra is regarded as one of the most experienced officers in internal security and anti-Naxal operations.
A native of Delhi and son of former Haryana DGP Kalyan Rudra, he has spent more than three decades in policing and intelligence work. Promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) in 2024, he is a recipient of both the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Sunita Khakhar
Another prominent contender is Special Director Sunita Khakhar, one of the senior-most women officers in India’s intelligence establishment.
An M.A. and M.Phil graduate from Delhi, she has been serving on central deputation since 2016 and has handled critical domestic intelligence assignments. She is also a recipient of the Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
However, if Deka’s extension receives approval, succession planning may be deferred for another year.
