Patna: The Bihar government has taken a significant step towards promoting environment-friendly public transport. The Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) will soon introduce 400 new electric AC buses to its fleet.
These modern buses are expected to provide comfortable travel for passengers while also helping reduce pollution levels across the state.
Patna to Receive Maximum Share of E-Buses
Out of the total 400 electric buses, Patna will get 150 buses, making it the biggest beneficiary.
- 75 buses will operate as city buses within Patna
- 75 buses will run on intercity routes such as Patna–Rajgir and Patna–Bihar Sharif
Each bus will have a seating capacity of around 60 passengers, improving public transport availability during peak hours.
Charging Infrastructure Being Developed Rapidly
To support the smooth operation of electric buses, the government is fast-tracking the development of charging infrastructure across the state.
Key updates include:
- Charging station in Purnia completed
- 60% work completed in Gaya
- 50% work completed in Patna and Muzaffarpur
- Construction progressing in Bhagalpur and Darbhanga
Charging an electric bus will take around 1 to 1.5 hours, ensuring quick turnaround for continuous operations.
Patna Depots to Be Modernized
To strengthen operations in the capital, all BSRTC depots, including Phulwarisharif Depot and ISBT Bairia, are being upgraded.
The plan includes:
- Installation of 8 charging points for every 50 buses
- Faster charging turnaround to reduce waiting time
- Ensuring uninterrupted bus services across routes
Strong Environmental Impact Already Visible
Bihar’s shift towards green transport has already shown positive results. Since 2021:
- Around 2.5 million liters of diesel saved
- Nearly 7,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions prevented
With the addition of 400 new electric buses, the state expects an even greater reduction in its carbon footprint.
Towards a Cleaner and Greener Bihar
The introduction of electric buses marks a major step towards sustainable urban mobility. It is expected to improve air quality, reduce fuel dependency, and modernize public transport across Bihar.
