New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday notified the appointment of five judicial officers and an advocate as Judges and Additional Judges of the Chhattisgarh and Gauhati High Courts.

The appointments were notified by the Department of Justice after the President, exercising powers under the Constitution and in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, approved the appointments.

Three Judicial Officers Join Chhattisgarh High Court

The three appointments to the Chhattisgarh High Court are:

  • Santosh Sharma — appointed as Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
  • Sushma Sawant — appointed as Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
  • Sudhir Kumar — appointed as Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.

All three are serving judicial officers in the Chhattisgarh judicial service. The High Court’s official judicial-officer records list Santosh Sharma, Sushma Sawant and Sudhir Kumar among its judicial officers.

Their appointments follow the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium at its meeting on August 18, 2026. The Collegium had recommended all three judicial officers for appointment as Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court.

The appointments will take effect from the dates on which the appointees assume charge.

Two Additional Judges for Gauhati High Court

The Centre has also appointed two persons as Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court:

  • Nchumbemo Mozhui — Advocate, appointed as Additional Judge.
  • Helen Dawngliani — Judicial Officer, appointed as Additional Judge.

The appointments bring both judicial-service and Bar representation to the latest additions to the Gauhati High Court.

Presidential Appointment

The Law Ministry notification states that the appointments were made “in exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, in consultation with Chief Justice of India.”

The development was also announced publicly by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal on September 8.

The latest appointments come as part of the Centre’s process of giving effect to recommendations for strengthening the High Courts through appointments from the judicial service and the Bar.
