New Delhi: State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced the commissioning of a 100 MW solar power project in Gujarat, marking a significant step in its transition towards renewable energy.
In a regulatory filing to the BSE, the company confirmed that it has received the commissioning certificate from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) for the solar plant, effective from March 31, 2026.
Key Milestone in CIL’s Green Energy Strategy
Coal India, a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Coal, has been actively expanding its renewable energy capacity as part of its diversification strategy.
The operationalisation of the 100 MW solar project represents:
- A major addition to its clean energy portfolio
- Progress toward reducing carbon emissions
- Strengthening of India’s solar energy infrastructure
CAG Flags Delays in Solar Capacity Expansion
Despite recent progress, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had earlier raised concerns over delays in Coal India’s renewable energy targets.
Key observations included:
- Target of 3,000 MW solar capacity
- Only 122.492 MW installed by December 2024
- Achievement of just 4.08% of the planned target
The CAG has urged Coal India to fast-track execution to support India’s Net Zero energy goals.
Push Towards Net Zero and Energy Transition
Coal India is increasingly focusing on renewable energy development alongside its core coal production business, which accounts for over 80% of India’s domestic coal output.
The company’s solar expansion is aligned with India’s broader energy transition and sustainability commitments.
