New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), has secured a major shipbuilding order from Ocean Sparkle Limited, an Adani Group company.

According to a regulatory filing submitted to the stock exchanges, the contract involves the construction of four advanced Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tugs for maritime operations in India.

Project to Build Four 70T Bollard Pull ASD Tugs

Under the agreement, UCSL will construct:

  • Four 70-ton bollard pull ASD tugs
  • Built as per Approved Standard Tug Design and Specifications (ASTDS)
  • Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways

These modern tugboats are designed to support port operations, vessel maneuvering, towing, and maritime safety services.

Delivery Timeline from 2028 to 2029

The company stated that delivery of the vessels is expected to begin in November 2028, while the final delivery is scheduled by June 2029.

The project has been categorized as a “Notable Order” under Cochin Shipyard’s order classification framework.

Boost for India’s Maritime and Shipbuilding Sector

The latest order further strengthens India’s growing focus on:

  • Indigenous shipbuilding
  • Maritime infrastructure development
  • Port modernization
  • Self-reliance in marine engineering

Industry experts believe the project aligns with the Government of India’s broader maritime development and “Make in India” initiatives.

No Related Party Transaction Involved

Cochin Shipyard clarified that the transaction does not fall under related-party transactions.

The company also confirmed that no promoter or group entity has any financial interest in the awarding company.

Growing Demand for Indigenous Tug Construction

The order reflects increasing demand for modern tugboats in India’s port and shipping ecosystem as ports continue to expand cargo handling capacity and operational efficiency.

ASD tugs are widely used for their superior maneuverability, operational flexibility, and safety performance in busy ports and coastal operations.
