Kolkata: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has delivered ‘Mangrol’, the third of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), to the Indian Navy, marking another milestone in India’s indigenous warship-building capabilities.

The delivery protocol was signed by Dr. Harikrishnan S., Director (Operations), CSL, and Commander U. Sharan Kumar, Commanding Officer (Designate), ‘Mangrol’.

The ceremony was attended by Jose V. J., CMD, CSL, Commodore Piyush Badoni, Command Refit Officer, Western Naval Command, and senior officials from the Indian Navy and CSL.

‘Mangrol’ Strengthens Indian Navy’s Shallow-Water Warfare Capability

Designed and constructed by CSL, ‘Mangrol’ has been developed to undertake critical maritime missions, particularly Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations in coastal and shallow waters.

The vessel is equipped with advanced systems designed to detect, track and counter underwater threats.

Its key operational roles include:

  • Anti-Submarine Warfare in shallow coastal waters
  • Underwater surveillance
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) operations
  • Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO)
  • Mine-laying operations

The induction of the vessel is expected to significantly strengthen the Indian Navy’s capabilities in shallow-water ASW operations.

Advanced Systems for Detecting Underwater Threats

‘Mangrol’ incorporates several advanced systems to improve its underwater warfare capabilities.

The warship is equipped with:

  • Advanced shallow-water sonars
  • Lightweight torpedoes
  • Indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare rockets
  • Advanced systems for underwater surveillance and tracking
  • Mine-laying capabilities

These systems enable the vessel to detect, track and counter underwater threats in challenging shallow-water environments.

Diesel Engine and Waterjet Propulsion System

The warship is powered by a Diesel Engine–Waterjet Propulsion system, designed to support its operations in shallow coastal waters.

‘Mangrol’ has been designed and constructed in accordance with the classification rules of Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

Its propulsion and integrated combat systems allow the vessel to undertake a range of maritime security missions while operating in coastal waters.

Around 80% Indigenous Content

The delivery of ‘Mangrol’ reflects the growing capabilities of Indian shipyards in indigenous warship design and construction.

The vessel has approximately 80% indigenous content, highlighting the increasing participation of Indian industry in the development of advanced defence platforms.

The project also contributes to the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by strengthening domestic capabilities in:

  • Warship design
  • Shipbuilding
  • Defence technology
  • Underwater warfare systems
  • Indigenous maritime equipment

‘Mangrol’ Named After Gujarat’s Historic Coastal Town

The warship has been named ‘Mangrol’ after the historic and strategically significant coastal township of Mangrol in Gujarat’s Surat district.

The naming reflects the Indian Navy’s tradition of drawing names for its vessels from India’s maritime heritage and strategically important locations.

CSL Continues to Strengthen Indigenous Shipbuilding

The delivery of the third ASW SWC represents another important milestone for Cochin Shipyard Limited and the Indian Navy.

The project demonstrates CSL’s capabilities in designing and constructing specialised naval platforms equipped with advanced indigenous defence systems.

The delivery also reinforces India’s efforts to strengthen maritime security through indigenous shipbuilding and defence capabilities.
