Delhi: In a significant move to tackle Delhi’s growing traffic congestion and parking challenges, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced plans to develop parking facilities for approximately 72,000 vehicles across the city. The initiative aims to streamline parking management and reduce on-road congestion in high-traffic areas.
232 Surface Parking Sites Identified Across Delhi
Under the plan, a total of 232 surface parking sites have been identified across different parts of the capital. These parking spaces will be developed in a phased manner through e-auctioning and structured implementation.
The distribution of parking sites is as follows:
- Dwarka: 98 sites (highest share)
- North Delhi: 53 sites
- Rohini: 30 sites
- East Delhi: 28 sites
- South Delhi: 23 sites
Officials stated that registration for e-auctioning of these parking sites has already begun.

Fast-Track Implementation Plan
According to DDA officials, surface parking lots can be developed quickly, making them an immediate solution for congested areas. The authority plans to:
- Operationalize at least 50 parking sites within the next few months
- Complete remaining 182 sites by November–December 2026
This phased rollout is expected to provide gradual but significant relief to Delhi’s parking pressure points.
Digital Parking System and Eco-Friendly Design
The upcoming parking facilities will feature a digital ticketing system, eliminating manual paper slips and improving efficiency.
Key development features include:
- Digitized parking fee collection
- Levelled surfaces to ensure smooth vehicle movement
- Installation of modern tiles to reduce dust generation
- Measures aimed at controlling air pollution
Officials emphasized that environmental considerations have been integrated into the design of these parking spaces.
Long-Term Solution: Five Multi-Level Parking Projects
Alongside surface parking development, DDA is also accelerating work on five multi-level car parking projects as a long-term solution to parking shortages.
These projects will have a combined capacity of 1,261 vehicles and will cover an area of approximately 11,048.87 square meters.
Locations of Multi-Level Parking Projects:
- Karkardooma
- Okhla Industrial Area
- Dilshad Garden
- Dwarka
- Saini Enclave
The projects are expected to be completed within three years from the date of tender allotment.
Focus on Traffic Relief and Urban Mobility
The initiative follows directives issued earlier this year by Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena, who instructed DDA to develop surface parking facilities capable of accommodating nearly one lakh vehicles across Delhi.
The new parking strategy is expected to:
- Reduce roadside parking
- Improve traffic flow in congested zones
- Enhance urban mobility infrastructure
- Support better city planning and management
The DDA’s large-scale parking expansion plan marks a major infrastructure push aimed at addressing Delhi’s long-standing parking crisis. With a combination of surface parking lots and multi-level parking structures, the initiative is expected to significantly improve traffic conditions and provide long-term relief to commuters across the capital.
