New Delhi: Armenia India defence deal is becoming one of the most discussed defence topics after Azerbaijan signed a major deal to buy JF-17 Block III fighter jets from Pakistan. Instead of matching Azerbaijan with more fighter aircraft, Armenia is focusing on building a strong layered air defence system using Indian-made defence equipment. Official statements from India and Armenia show that defence cooperation between the two countries has grown rapidly in recent years, making India one of Armenia’s most important defence partners.

Armenia India Defence Deal:Why Is Armenia Strengthening Its Air Defence

The military balance in the South Caucasus is changing quickly. Azerbaijan is modernising its air force with advanced fighter jets and expanding defence cooperation with Pakistan and Türkiye.

To respond to these developments, Armenia is investing in modern air defence systems that can protect its skies from fighter aircraft, drones, missiles, and other aerial threats.

Instead of spending billions on new fighter jets, Armenia is building a multi-layered defence network designed to detect, track, and destroy incoming threats before they reach important military or civilian targets.

What Is a Layered Air Defence System

A layered air defence system uses different types of radars, missiles, and surveillance systems that work together. Each system protects a different range and altitude. This means enemy aircraft, drones, helicopters, rockets, or cruise missiles can be detected and intercepted at multiple stages. Military experts consider layered air defence one of the most effective ways to protect national airspace.

Armenia India Defence Deal: Why Is Azerbaijan’s JF-17 Block III Deal Important

Azerbaijan recently decided to strengthen its air force by purchasing JF-17 Block III fighter aircraft from Pakistan. The JF-17 Block III is a modern multirole fighter equipped with:

  • AESA radar
  • Advanced electronic warfare systems
  • Modern cockpit displays
  • Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile capability
  • Precision strike capability

These aircraft will significantly improve Azerbaijan’s ability to conduct long-range air operations. This development has increased Armenia’s focus on strengthening its ground-based air defence network instead of competing directly with fighter aircraft.

Armenia India Defence Deal: India Has Become Armenia’s Trusted Defence Partner

India has rapidly emerged as one of Armenia’s biggest defence suppliers. In recent years, both countries have expanded military cooperation through official meetings, defence consultations, and long-term cooperation plans.

According to the Armenian Ministry of Defence, India and Armenia held their first official defence consultations and approved a defence cooperation programme covering military exchanges and future collaboration. This partnership continues to grow through regular high-level meetings between defence officials.

Armenia India Defence Deal:Indian Defence Systems Supplied to Armenia

India has supplied several advanced defence systems to Armenia. These include:

Akash Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) System

The Akash missile system is designed to destroy enemy aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles. It provides medium-range air defence and protects important military installations. Armenia became the first foreign country to purchase the Akash missile system.

Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher

The Pinaka system provides rapid and accurate fire support over long distances. It can attack enemy positions quickly and is one of India’s most successful indigenous weapon systems.

Swathi Weapon Locating Radar

The Swathi radar detects the location of enemy artillery, rockets, and mortars. Once detected, friendly forces can respond accurately and quickly.

Why Armenia Chose Indian Defence Equipment

Several reasons explain Armenia’s growing interest in Indian defence systems.

Proven Technology

Indian defence equipment has been tested under different operational conditions and continues to improve through indigenous development.

Cost-Effective

Indian systems generally offer modern capabilities at competitive prices compared to many Western alternatives.

Reliable Defence Cooperation

India has strengthened long-term defence relations with Armenia through government-level agreements and military cooperation.

Indigenous Defence Industry

India’s “Make in India” defence programme has increased the production of advanced indigenous military equipment for both domestic use and exports.
