According to the reported details, more than 100 teams from different countries took part in the exercise. The Indian contingent was among the teams that achieved gold medals. The result reflects the soldiers’ ability to work together, make decisions under pressure and maintain performance during physically demanding military tasks.

What Is Cambrian Patrol

Cambrian Patrol is an international military exercise organised by the British Army. It began in 1959 as a field-training exercise designed to test basic soldiering skills.

The exercise takes place in the challenging terrain of the Brecon Beacons area in mid-Wales. It attracts military teams from several countries, including India and other international participants. It is not simply a race to reach the finish line first. Teams are assessed against military training standards and can receive gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance.

How Tough Is The Cambrian Patrol Exercise

Cambrian Patrol is designed to test soldiers in realistic and demanding conditions. Patrol teams must travel through difficult terrain while carrying equipment and completing military tasks within strict time limits.

A typical patrol can last around 48 hours. Teams may cover approximately 60 kilometres while carrying equipment weighing up to 32 kilograms per soldier. The exercise tests several important military abilities, including:

  • Physical Endurance: Moving long distances across difficult terrain while carrying heavy equipment.
  • Navigation: Finding the correct route and reaching designated locations.
  • Teamwork: Working together to complete tasks and support fellow soldiers.
  • Leadership: Making important decisions under pressure.
  • Tactical Skills: Responding to simulated battlefield situations.
  • Communication: Sharing information clearly and coordinating actions.
  • Mission Planning: Managing time, resources and tasks during the patrol.

Depending on the scenario, teams may also face tasks involving casualty evacuation, obstacle crossings, intelligence gathering and responses to simulated chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.

How Are Teams Awarded Medals

Cambrian Patrol does not have only one overall winner. Several teams can earn gold medals in the same edition.

Military assessors evaluate each patrol’s performance against established training standards. Gold, silver and bronze medals recognise different levels of achievement. Teams must demonstrate their ability to complete tasks effectively, follow procedures and maintain professional standards throughout the exercise. This assessment system makes the event a test of military competence rather than simply speed or physical strength.

Assam Regiment History At Cambrian Patrol

The Indian Army has participated in Cambrian Patrol for several years, with units from the Gorkha Rifles and Garhwal Rifles achieving notable results in earlier editions. Reported results include:

  • 2007: The 5th Battalion, 1st Gorkha Rifles won gold.
  • 2010: The 4th/9th Gorkha Rifles won gold.
  • 2011: Another Indian Gorkha Rifles contingent secured gold.
  • 2014: The 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles won gold.
  • 2015: The Ghatak patrol of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Gorkha Rifles earned silver.
  • 2016: The 2nd Battalion, 8th Gorkha Rifles won gold.
  • 2021: The 4th Battalion, 5th Gorkha Rifles (Frontier Force) won gold.
  • 2025: The 13th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles was among the silver medal recipients.

The Assam Regiment’s reported gold medal in 2026 adds another achievement to the Indian Army’s record at this demanding international exercise.

Why This Achievement Matters For The Indian Army

Success at Cambrian Patrol demonstrates the importance of disciplined training, teamwork and the ability to perform in challenging environments.

The exercise exposes participating soldiers to demanding situations that require careful planning, effective communication and quick decisions. These skills are important for military operations in difficult terrain.

International participation also gives soldiers an opportunity to test their capabilities against teams from other countries and learn from different military approaches.

The Assam Regiment’s reported performance therefore represents both an individual unit achievement and a demonstration of the value of rigorous military training.
