Inside The IAF Anti Drone Strategy To Turn Helicopters Into Drone Killers

The Indian Air Force plans to equip its attack helicopters with micro-missiles, AI-powered target identification systems, RF and GPS jammers, and advanced electronic warfare technologies to counter drones and loitering munitions.

New Delhi: IAF helicopters with micro-missiles and AI systems are set to become a key part of India’s future counter-drone strategy. The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to equip its attack helicopters with micro-missiles, AI-powered target identification systems, radio-frequency (RF) and GPS jammers, and advanced fragmentation warheads to detect and destroy hostile drones. The proposal was highlighted during the IAF-SIDM SANKALP 2026 seminar as part of India’s broader effort to strengthen indigenous defence technology and prepare for modern drone warfare.

IAF Anti Drone Strategy: Why Is The IAF Upgrading Its Helicopters

Modern conflicts have shown that drones and loitering munitions are becoming major battlefield threats. Small, low-flying drones are often difficult for traditional air defence systems to detect and destroy.

The IAF aims to build a layered counter-drone capability by using helicopters as mobile airborne platforms capable of intercepting hostile drones before they reach their targets.

IAF Anti Drone Strategy: What New Technologies Will Be Added

The proposed micro-missiles are designed to engage slow-moving, low-altitude unmanned aerial systems (UAS). These lightweight precision weapons will provide helicopters with an effective way to destroy reconnaissance drones, kamikaze drones and loitering munitions.

AI-Powered Target Identification Systems

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help helicopters quickly detect, classify, track and lock onto hostile drones. The AI system is expected to reduce pilot workload while improving target recognition and engagement speed in complex battlefield conditions.

RF And GPS Jammers

The helicopters are also expected to carry radio-frequency (RF) and GPS jamming systems. These electronic warfare tools can disrupt enemy drone communications and satellite navigation, preventing drones from completing their missions even before a missile is fired.

Advanced Fragmentation Warheads

The proposed micro-missiles may use specialised fragmentation warheads that spread high-speed fragments over a wider area. This increases the chances of destroying small and highly manoeuvrable drones, including drone swarms.

Which Helicopters Could Receive The Upgrade

Although the IAF has not officially confirmed the final platforms, defence reports indicate that the upgrades are expected to be integrated primarily on:

  • AH-64E Apache attack helicopters
  • Indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand

These helicopters already possess advanced sensors and weapon integration capabilities suitable for anti-drone operations.

SANKALP 2026 Supports Indigenous Defence Innovation

The operational requirements were presented during the IAF-SIDM SANKALP 2026 seminar. Through its latest problem statements, the IAF has invited Indian defence companies, startups and research institutions to develop indigenous AI sensors, electronic warfare systems and specialised micro-missile technologies under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The proposed system is expected to provide several advantages:

  • Precision interception with micro-missiles.

  • Greater support for indigenous defence manufacturing.

IAF Anti Drone Strategy: Global Lessons Driving The Modernisation

Recent conflicts have shown how drones are changing warfare. Experiences from conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East have highlighted the need for mobile and layered counter-drone systems that combine kinetic weapons with electronic warfare. The IAF’s proposal reflects these evolving operational requirements.

Current Status

The capability has been presented as part of the IAF’s future operational requirements and indigenisation programme. The Indian Air Force has outlined the requirement through SANKALP 2026 to encourage indigenous development. The proposal will move forward through the defence procurement and development process before operational deployment.
