New Delhi: IAF helicopters with micro-missiles and AI systems are set to become a key part of India’s future counter-drone strategy. The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to equip its attack helicopters with micro-missiles, AI-powered target identification systems, radio-frequency (RF) and GPS jammers, and advanced fragmentation warheads to detect and destroy hostile drones. The proposal was highlighted during the IAF-SIDM SANKALP 2026 seminar as part of India’s broader effort to strengthen indigenous defence technology and prepare for modern drone warfare.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help helicopters quickly detect, classify, track and lock onto hostile drones. The AI system is expected to reduce pilot workload while improving target recognition and engagement speed in complex battlefield conditions.
RF And GPS Jammers
The helicopters are also expected to carry radio-frequency (RF) and GPS jamming systems. These electronic warfare tools can disrupt enemy drone communications and satellite navigation, preventing drones from completing their missions even before a missile is fired.
Advanced Fragmentation Warheads
The proposed micro-missiles may use specialised fragmentation warheads that spread high-speed fragments over a wider area. This increases the chances of destroying small and highly manoeuvrable drones, including drone swarms.
Which Helicopters Could Receive The Upgrade
Although the IAF has not officially confirmed the final platforms, defence reports indicate that the upgrades are expected to be integrated primarily on:
- AH-64E Apache attack helicopters
- Indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand
These helicopters already possess advanced sensors and weapon integration capabilities suitable for anti-drone operations.
SANKALP 2026 Supports Indigenous Defence Innovation
The operational requirements were presented during the IAF-SIDM SANKALP 2026 seminar. Through its latest problem statements, the IAF has invited Indian defence companies, startups and research institutions to develop indigenous AI sensors, electronic warfare systems and specialised micro-missile technologies under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
