New Delhi: India has taken a major step to strengthen its defence manufacturing by selecting four private defence companies to complete key DRDO missile programmes within the next three to five years. The move is part of the government’s plan to increase private sector participation, improve production capacity, and support India’s defence export ambitions.
The initiative is led by the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It aims to reduce dependence on public sector manufacturing while speeding up the delivery of advanced missile systems for the Indian Armed Forces.
DRDO Missile Programmes: Four Private Companies Chosen
According to reports, the government has identified four major private defence manufacturers to participate in the programme:
- ICOMM
- Adani Defence
- Bharat Forge
- Tata Group
These companies are expected to work closely with DRDO to complete selected missile projects within the next three to five years after the formal bidding and technology transfer process is completed.

Astra Mk-2 Likely to Be the First Missile
The Astra Mark-2 beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile is expected to become the first missile manufactured under the new private-sector production model. The missile has an engagement range of around 180–200 km and has been developed by DRDO to improve the Indian Air Force’s long-range air combat capability.
DRDO Missile Programmes: Why India Is Opening Missile Production
The government wants to:
- Increase missile production capacity.
- Reduce pressure on state-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
- Deliver missiles faster to the armed forces.
- Boost defence exports under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
- Encourage advanced defence manufacturing in the private sector.
Which Aircraft Will Use Astra Mk-2
The Astra Mk-2 missile is planned for integration with several frontline fighter aircraft, including:
- Su-30MKI
- Tejas Mk-2
- MiG-29
- Rafale (future integration plans)
These aircraft will receive a stronger long-range air-to-air combat capability after induction of the missile.
DRDO Missile Programmes: Growing Export Opportunities
India is also looking at international markets for indigenous missiles. Countries such as Indonesia have shown interest in procuring the Astra missile family, reflecting growing global confidence in India’s defence technology and manufacturing capabilities.
