New Delhi: The Indian Army is strengthening its focus on space-based military capabilities to improve battlefield awareness, secure communications and operational readiness.

On November 3, 2026, the Army organised a seminar titled “Emerging Battlefield: Leveraging Space for Land Forces” at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.

The event brought together experts from the Armed Forces, ISRO, DRDO, industry and academia to discuss how space technology can support India’s future military operations.

Indian Army Holds Major Seminar On Space Warfare

The seminar focused on the growing importance of space technology in modern warfare. Military experts discussed how satellite systems and advanced communication networks can help ground forces operate more effectively.

The discussions covered three important areas: Space Domain Awareness, Space Denial capabilities and Secure Satellite Communications.

These technologies are becoming increasingly important as modern military operations depend on fast, reliable information and communication systems.

Why Space Warfare Is Important For The Indian Army

Space technology plays an important role in supporting military operations. Satellites can provide surveillance information, intelligence, navigation support and communication services to military forces.

These capabilities help commanders understand battlefield conditions and make faster decisions.

For the Indian Army, reliable satellite services can improve coordination between different military units, especially during complex operations.

Modern warfare is no longer limited to land, air and sea. Space, cyber and cognitive domains are also becoming important parts of national defence.

Space Warfare: Three Major Areas Of Focus

1. Space Domain Awareness

Space Domain Awareness means monitoring and understanding activities in space. It helps identify satellites, possible threats and unusual activities around important space assets.

This capability is important because military forces depend on satellites for communication, navigation and surveillance. Better awareness of activities in orbit can help India protect its important space infrastructure.

2. Space Denial Capabilities

Space Denial refers to the ability to restrict or disrupt an opponent’s use of space-based capabilities during a conflict.

This can involve protecting friendly space systems while developing ways to counter hostile space-enabled military activities.

The seminar highlighted the importance of understanding these capabilities as space becomes a more competitive military domain.

3. Secure Satellite Communications

Secure satellite communications are essential for maintaining reliable contact between military units and command centres.

During a conflict, communication networks may face jamming, cyberattacks or other disruptions. Therefore, the development of secure and resilient communication systems is important for maintaining military coordination and operational effectiveness.

What are the Major Focus Areas of Space Warfare

Another important area discussed during the seminar was the development of indigenous space technologies.

India wants to strengthen its domestic defence and space technology capabilities to reduce dependence on foreign systems.

Home-grown technologies that can continue working in difficult or contested environments could improve India’s military preparedness. This approach also supports the country’s wider goal of achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

Inside India’s Multi-Domain Operations Strategy

The seminar also reflects India’s growing focus on Multi-Domain Operations (MDO). Multi-Domain Operations involve the coordinated use of capabilities across six major domains: land, sea, air, space, cyber and cognitive.

India’s Joint Doctrine for Multi-Domain Operations, released in August 2025, provides an important framework for improving coordination across these domains.

The Defence Space Agency (DSA) also plays an important role in India’s military space framework. Integrating space-based information with traditional military operations can improve situational awareness, coordination and decision-making.
