New Delhi: GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has successfully commissioned its 1.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Karnataka.
The commissioning marks a significant milestone in GAIL’s strategy to expand its presence in the downstream petrochemical sector and strengthen India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The facility is expected to increase domestic PTA production capacity, reduce the country’s dependence on imports and support the growing requirements of India’s polyester, textile, apparel and packaging industries.
GAIL’s Subsidiary GMPL Commissions 1.25 MTPA PTA Plant
The newly commissioned plant has an installed production capacity of 1.25 million tonnes of PTA annually, making it an important addition to India’s domestic petrochemical manufacturing infrastructure.
The facility was originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL), which subsequently underwent the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP).
In 2023, GAIL acquired the company through the insolvency resolution process under a Resolution Plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
Following the acquisition, GAIL undertook an extensive revival and refurbishment programme to restore the facility to operational condition. The process involved significant engineering, technological and operational challenges.
The successful commissioning reflects the collective efforts of the GMPL team, technology partners, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders, supported by GAIL’s management.

Mangalore Plant Benefits from Strategic Port Connectivity
The GMPL facility is strategically located near New Mangalore Port, providing important logistical advantages for the movement of raw materials and finished products.
The plant is supported by dedicated logistics infrastructure, which is expected to facilitate efficient transportation and improve operational connectivity.
Its proximity to the port is an important advantage for the facility, particularly in managing the movement of materials required for large-scale petrochemical manufacturing.
GAIL to Market PTA Under G-Tex Brand
GAIL will market the PTA manufactured at the Mangalore facility under its brand name G-Tex.
The company will leverage its established marketing network and customer reach to strengthen the product’s presence in the domestic market.
The commissioning of the plant also marks an important step in GAIL’s downstream petrochemical expansion strategy.
By reviving the previously distressed industrial facility and bringing it back into productive operation, GAIL has added significant manufacturing capacity to its petrochemical portfolio.
GMPL Commissioning Strengthens India’s Petrochemical Industry
The commissioning of the 1.25 MTPA PTA plant is expected to support India’s efforts to strengthen domestic petrochemical manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported raw materials.
The facility will contribute to the availability of essential inputs for downstream polyester manufacturers while supporting the growth of the textile, apparel and packaging industries.
The development also highlights the role of industrial asset revival in expanding manufacturing capacity and strengthening India’s self-reliance in critical industrial materials.
