Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has expanded its policing infrastructure with the opening of three new police stations at Motera, Vastral and Hanspura. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi inaugurated the facilities on November 5, taking the total number of police stations in the city from 49 to 52.
The expansion is intended to bring police services closer to residents, reduce the distance they need to travel to register complaints or submit applications, and improve law-and-order arrangements in the city’s growing neighbourhoods.
The inauguration coincided with Diwali and Rama Ekadashi. Senior police officials and public representatives, including Gujarat Police Chief G S Malik (IPS: 1993: GJ) and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot (IPS: 1996: GJ), attended the event.
Three New Stations to Improve Access to Police Services
Addressing the gathering, Sanghavi said the new police stations would make it easier for residents to approach the police for complaints, applications and other official work without having to travel long distances.
The three locations are significant in the context of Ahmedabad’s expanding urban footprint. The additional facilities are expected to strengthen local policing, support crime prevention and improve the police presence in the areas they serve.
The Motera Police Station is also expected to play an important role in security arrangements around major venues, particularly the Narendra Modi Stadium, which hosts large sporting events and other gatherings.
Ahmedabad’s Police Network: Key Developments
The addition of the three stations follows a broader restructuring of Ahmedabad’s police network announced earlier in 2026. The expansion was aimed at responding to the city’s geographical growth and increasing policing requirements.
Key points include:
- Police stations: The total number has increased from 49 to 52.
- New locations: Motera, Vastral and Hanspura.
- Police divisions: The earlier restructuring also provided for three new divisions — P, R and S.
- New senior positions: The plan included one Deputy Commissioner of Police post and three Assistant Commissioner of Police posts.
- Objective: Improve policing efficiency, distribute responsibilities more effectively and strengthen law-and-order management in expanding parts of the city.
Sanghavi Calls for Citizen-Friendly Policing
At the inauguration, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed that police personnel must combine firm action against criminals with sensitivity towards ordinary citizens.
He said anti-social elements should fear the law, while people approaching police stations, particularly those from economically weaker sections, should be treated with dignity, heard patiently and provided timely assistance.
Sanghavi also urged police personnel to maintain a supportive approach towards street vendors, roadside stall owners and small traders during the Diwali period. He said they should be allowed to conduct their businesses peacefully, including during late hours.
He appealed to citizens to support small businesses during the festive season rather than resorting to excessive bargaining.
Police Personnel Praised for Festival Security
Sanghavi acknowledged the work of Ahmedabad’s Crime Branch in dismantling an inter-state drug network and seizing MD drugs and heroin worth crores of rupees.
He also praised police personnel for their extended duties during Navratri, when large crowds attended celebrations across the state. Their efforts, he said, helped maintain security for festivalgoers and protect commercial and industrial establishments.
The Deputy Chief Minister encouraged police personnel to spend time with their families after completing their official responsibilities and celebrate Diwali with their loved ones.
Senior Officials Attend Inauguration
The event was attended by Minister of State for Urban Development Darshna Vaghela, Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot, Gujarat Police Chief G S Malik, MP Hasmukh Patel and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot.
MLAs Alpesh Thakor, Payal Kukrani and Kanchan Radadiya, Deputy Mayor Anju Shah, senior police officers, other public representatives and local residents were also present.
