New Delhi: Jaguar REST Glide Kit is becoming an important capability for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The system can convert ordinary bombs into smart precision weapons that can hit targets from a long distance. With this technology, Jaguar fighter aircraft can attack enemy positions while staying outside dangerous air defence zones. The capability is expected to improve the IAF’s strike power, accuracy, and pilot safety.
What Is The Jaguar REST Glide Kit
REST stands for Range Extension And Smart Tail. It is a modular guidance and range-extension kit that can be attached to existing unguided bombs. Once fitted, the bomb becomes a precision-guided weapon capable of striking targets from a much greater distance. The system is similar to the American JDAM-ER concept, which upgrades conventional bombs into smart weapons.

How Jaguar REST Glide Kit Works
The kit uses a Smart Tail section equipped with:
- Inertial Navigation System (INS)
- Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
- Anti-jamming technology
After release from an aircraft, deployable wings open automatically and help the bomb glide toward its target. Depending on release altitude and speed, the weapon can reach targets up to around 120 kilometers away.
What are the Features Of The Jaguar REST Glide Kit
The biggest advantage of REST is its stand-off attack capability. Instead of flying close to enemy air defence systems, the aircraft can release the weapon from a safe distance and leave the area quickly. This improves aircraft survivability during combat operations.
High Accuracy
Reports indicate that the system can achieve a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of about 10 meters. This means the bomb can strike very close to the intended target, making it effective against military infrastructure and strategic assets.
Anti-Jamming Capability
Modern battlefields often involve GPS jamming and electronic warfare. The REST kit includes anti-jamming features that help maintain accuracy even in contested electronic environments.
Compatible With Multiple Bomb Types
The kit can be integrated with:
- 250 kg bombs
- 500 kg bombs
- 1000 kg bombs
- MK-80 series bombs
- High Speed Low Drag (HSLD) bombs
- Multi-Purpose Rigid (MPR) bombs
This allows the IAF to upgrade existing bomb inventories instead of buying entirely new weapons.
Why Is It Important For The Jaguar Fighter?
The Jaguar is one of the IAF’s primary deep-strike aircraft. Traditionally, it had to fly relatively close to enemy territory to deliver bombs, exposing the aircraft to air defence systems.
Stand-Off Attack Advantage
With REST, the Jaguar can launch weapons from outside many enemy air defence envelopes. This significantly reduces risk to both pilots and aircraft while increasing mission success rates.
Support For DARIN-III Upgraded Jaguars
The IAF’s Jaguar fleet has already received major DARIN-III upgrades, including advanced avionics, navigation systems, mission computers, and AESA radar. The addition of REST further strengthens the aircraft’s combat capability and extends its operational relevance.
Strategic Significance of Jaguar REST Glide Kit For India
The integration of REST reflects ongoing defence cooperation between India and Israel. Both countries have worked together on several advanced defence technologies, and precision-guided weapons remain a key area of collaboration.
Cost-Effective Capability Enhancement
Instead of purchasing expensive new missiles, the IAF can upgrade existing bomb stockpiles. This provides a practical and economical way to improve strike capability without major procurement costs.
Better Preparedness For Modern Warfare
Modern conflicts increasingly rely on long-range precision strikes. Systems like REST allow aircraft to attack command centers, logistics hubs, fuel depots, bridges, bunkers, and other strategic targets with greater safety and effectiveness.
