New Delhi: The Operation Safed Sagar was a turning point in the 1999 Kargil War. During the conflict, the Indian Air Force (IAF) used Mirage 2000 fighter jets, MiG-21s and MiG-27s to attack enemy positions at high altitudes. According to senior IAF officers and official statements shared during Kargil Vijay Diwas events, these air operations played a key role in helping India regain strategic positions and secure victory.

The Indian Air Force launched Operation Safed Sagar to provide air support to the Indian Army after Pakistani intruders occupied high-altitude positions in the Kargil sector.

Operation Safed Sagar Changed the Course of the Kargil War

Senior IAF officials said Mirage 2000 fighter jets equipped with precision laser-guided bombs delivered powerful strikes on enemy bunkers located in difficult mountain terrain.

The use of these precision weapons was a major breakthrough for the IAF. It allowed India to target enemy positions with greater accuracy while reducing risks to its own forces. Officials described the air campaign as a decisive factor that forced enemy troops to withdraw from strategic heights.

Mirage 2000 Played a Crucial Combat Role in Operation Safed Sagar

The Mirage 2000 aircraft became one of the most effective platforms during the conflict. On June 24, 1999, Mirage 2000 jets carried out laser-guided bombing missions on Tiger Hill. These strikes weakened enemy positions and supported Indian Army operations that eventually recaptured the strategic peak.

Retired Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa has previously stated that the deployment of Mirage 2000 aircraft and close coordination with ground forces “turned the tide” of the Kargil War in India’s favour.

MiG-21s and MiG-27s Also Made a Major Contribution

While Mirage 2000 aircraft received significant attention, MiG-21 and MiG-27 fighter jets also played an important role during Operation Safed Sagar. These aircraft carried out combat missions against enemy positions in the mountains, while helicopters supported casualty evacuation and transport aircraft delivered heavy logistics supplies to forward airfields. The combined efforts of different IAF platforms strengthened India’s military operations throughout the conflict.

Operation Safed Sagar: Kargil War Memorial Preserves the IAF’s Legacy

The Kargil War Memorial in Dras honours more than 500 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the conflict. A vintage MiG-21 aircraft displayed at the memorial belonged to the IAF’s famous Golden Arrows Squadron (No. 17 Squadron).

The aircraft is linked to Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for his bravery during the Kargil War. The MiG-21 was installed at the memorial in 2013 to recognise the Indian Air Force’s contribution to Operation Safed Sagar.

Veteran Recalls Flying the Displayed MiG-21

Retired Group Captain Sanjay Misra, a Kargil War veteran and former member of the Golden Arrows Squadron, recalled that the MiG-21 displayed at the memorial was the same aircraft he flew for nearly 15 years. He also shared how visiting the Tololing battlefield helped him understand the extreme challenges faced by Indian soldiers, who fought from difficult terrain to achieve victory.

Upcoming Web Series to Highlight Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja

An upcoming web series titled “Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War” is expected to showcase Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja’s bravery. During the conflict, his aircraft was hit by a shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile while he was attempting to locate a downed pilot, despite knowing the risks involved.

IAF Pushes for Indigenous Defence Technology

At a defence seminar, Air Marshal Ashutosh Ghuratia highlighted the importance of Atmanirbhar Bharat and indigenous defence technology. He said India’s future aerospace strength depends on innovation, research partnerships and self-reliance. According to him, technologies such as artificial intelligence, predictive maintenance, quantum technologies and cyber resilience are becoming increasingly important for modern warfare.

He added that reducing dependence on foreign defence technologies is now essential for India’s national security and long-term technological sovereignty.
