New Delhi: Roads in modern warfare are just as important as advanced weapons, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday. Speaking at the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Strategic Infrastructure Conclave in New Delhi, he said roads, tunnels, airfields and ports remain essential for protecting India, even in the age of AI, drones and precision-guided weapons.
The Defence Minister said modern technology is changing warfare, but strong infrastructure still decides how quickly soldiers, weapons and supplies reach the battlefield.
Why Are Roads Important in Modern Warfare
Rajnath Singh explained that the first battle is not always fought at the border. It often begins on the roads that carry soldiers and military equipment to the frontline. He said people who build these strategic roads play an important role in national security, just like soldiers who defend the country’s borders.
Modern Weapons Need Strong Infrastructure
The Defence Minister said advanced military technology alone cannot win wars. Roads, bridges, tunnels, airfields and ports help the armed forces move faster, transport heavy weapons and maintain supply lines during emergencies.
Without reliable infrastructure, even the most advanced military equipment cannot be used effectively.
BRO Is Strengthening India’s Border Infrastructure
Rajnath Singh praised the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for using modern technology and innovative construction methods. He said the organisation is improving border connectivity and helping India build stronger defence infrastructure under the government’s vision of a developed India by 2047.
BRO Has Changed into a World-Class Organisation
The Defence Minister said the BRO has transformed from a road-building agency into one of the world’s leading strategic infrastructure organisations. He highlighted several landmark projects, including:
- Atal Tunnel
- Umling La Pass Road
- Sela Tunnel
These projects improve military mobility while also helping local people with better transport and connectivity.
Roads in Modern Warfare: Technology Is Making Border Construction Faster
Rajnath Singh said modern tunnelling technology and advanced engineering have made it easier to build roads in difficult mountain areas. He added that the BRO’s work reflects both technological innovation and the dedication of its engineers and workers.
Roads in Modern Warfare: Government Focuses on Better Border Connectivity
The government is expanding road, rail, air and digital connectivity across border regions. The Defence Minister also said the Vibrant Village Programme is helping develop border villages into India’s “First Villages” by improving infrastructure and creating new opportunities for local communities.
BRO Is Using AI and Digital Planning
BRO Director General Lt. Gen. Harpal Singh said the organisation is moving towards digital planning and AI-powered solutions. He said the BRO is also adopting mechanisation, modern construction techniques and better collaboration with industries and educational institutions to build future-ready infrastructure.
