New Delhi: Sigma Advanced Systems has signed a defence agreement with Munitions India Limited (MIL) to manufacture and integrate 155mm artillery course correction fuzes in India. The partnership aims to strengthen India’s domestic defence manufacturing industry and improve its ability to produce advanced ammunition technology.

The agreement also focuses on technology transfer, local manufacturing, and the development of specialised defence systems. This move supports India’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported defence equipment and build stronger domestic capabilities for the Indian Armed Forces.

Details of Sigma Advanced Systems Munitions India Deal

The two companies have signed an exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on the manufacturing and supply of 155mm artillery course-correction fuzes.

The agreement covers the fuzes as well as related components, subsystems, and technologies. It also includes technology transfer, product qualification, local manufacturing, and integration of the guidance systems.

The partnership is designed to combine Sigma Advanced Systems’ engineering expertise with Munitions India Limited’s ammunition manufacturing infrastructure.

What Are 155mm Artillery Course-Correction Fuzes

A fuze is a device fitted to ammunition that performs a specific function during its use. In this agreement, the focus is on advanced course-correction technology for 155mm artillery ammunition.

Course-correction technology allows an artillery projectile to make adjustments to its flight path after it has been fired. This can help improve accuracy compared with conventional unguided ammunition.

The technology is intended to support more accurate artillery operations. However, the companies have not publicly disclosed specific performance figures for the system under this agreement.

How Will Sigma Advanced Systems Munitions India Deal Support India’s Defence Industry

The agreement aims to increase India’s ability to manufacture advanced artillery technologies within the country.

Local production can help develop domestic industrial expertise and strengthen India’s defence manufacturing supply chain.

Technology Transfer And Localisation

Technology transfer is an important part of the agreement. Sigma plans to support the transfer, qualification, manufacturing, and integration of course-correction technology in India.

Qualification involves checking whether a product meets the required technical and operational standards before it is accepted for use.

Support For Indian Armed Forces

The partnership aims to support important defence programmes of the Indian Armed Forces by developing domestic capabilities in precision-guided artillery ammunition.

The agreement brings together engineering and programme execution capabilities with established ammunition production infrastructure.

Reduced Dependence On Imports

India has been working to expand its domestic defence manufacturing capabilities. Producing more advanced technologies within the country could reduce reliance on imported solutions.

However, the extent of any reduction in imports will depend on successful development, qualification, production, and future procurement requirements.

Role Of Sigma Advanced Systems In The Project

Sigma Advanced Systems Limited is an Indian aerospace and defence engineering company. It works across areas such as aerospace, avionics, naval systems, radar, communications, and precision engineering.

Under this partnership, the company will contribute its engineering expertise, technology capabilities, and programme execution experience.

The agreement also supports Sigma’s ambition to expand beyond precision engineering and subsystem manufacturing into the development and integration of more advanced defence systems.

About Munitions India Limited

Munitions India Limited (MIL) is a defence public sector enterprise under India’s Ministry of Defence. It has experience in manufacturing ammunition and related defence products.

Its manufacturing infrastructure can support the integration and domestic production of the artillery technologies covered by the agreement.

By working with Sigma, MIL can combine its manufacturing capabilities with specialised engineering and guidance technology expertise.

How Does Sigma Advanced Systems Munitions India Deal Support Make In India And Atmanirbhar Bharat

The partnership aligns with the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which aim to increase domestic manufacturing and strengthen India’s industrial capabilities.

Developing advanced defence technologies locally can help Indian companies gain technical knowledge, improve manufacturing capabilities, and contribute to the country’s defence supply chain.

The agreement is a step towards these objectives, although actual production outcomes will depend on further development, qualification, and implementation.
