Delhi: The Delhi government has rolled out extensive heatwave relief measures, including mobile heat relief units and cooling zones across all 13 districts, to protect citizens from extreme summer conditions.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiatives aim to ensure public safety and comfort during the ongoing heatwave, especially for workers, commuters, and vulnerable groups.
14 Cooling Zones Set Up Across Delhi for Public Relief
A total of 14 cooling zones have been established across the capital. These zones are being operated with the help of civil defence volunteers, with 10 volunteers assigned to each zone to manage operations and assist the public.
The facilities are designed to provide temporary relief to people exposed to high temperatures in busy and open areas.
Mobile Heat Relief Units Cover All 13 Districts
The government has deployed mobile heat relief units across all 13 districts of Delhi, ensuring wider outreach and accessibility.
Between 6 May and 23 May, these units provided relief to approximately:
- 2.65 lakh people assisted
- 1,13,900 litres of cold drinking water distributed
- Over 1 lakh ORS packets given
- 44,646 gamchas (cloth towels) distributed
- 30,864 caps provided for sun protection
Officials said these measures helped prevent dehydration and heatstroke cases during peak heat conditions.
Cooling Zones Equipped with Essential Facilities
Each cooling zone has been equipped with basic amenities to support citizens, including:
- Seating capacity for around 100 people
- Cold drinking water supply
- 5 desert coolers
- 5 high-speed fans
- ORS packets and first aid kits
- Caps and cloth towels for heat protection
These facilities are specifically designed for rickshaw pullers, labourers, commuters, and other outdoor workers.
Civil Defence Volunteers Managing Operations
To ensure smooth functioning, each cooling zone is staffed with 10 civil defence volunteers. They assist citizens, manage arrangements, and ensure proper upkeep of the facilities.
Authorities have confirmed that the system is being operated under the supervision of the Revenue Department.
Heat Relief Drive to Continue Till July
The government has instructed that mobile unit locations will be rotated daily to cover crowded and high-need areas effectively.
The heat relief campaign will continue until July, with plans to strengthen the system further if required based on weather conditions.
Government Focus on Citizen Welfare During Extreme Heat
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to public welfare and humane governance.
She said the administration is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to expand relief measures if the heatwave conditions worsen.
Delhi’s large-scale heatwave response, combining cooling zones and mobile relief units, aims to provide immediate and accessible support to citizens. With thousands already assisted, the initiative is being seen as a key step in reducing heat-related risks across the capital during peak summer months.
