Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority is preparing a major infrastructure push to address the capital’s growing parking crisis by developing facilities with capacity for nearly one lakh vehicles across the city.
The proposal was discussed in a high-level meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena with DDA officials and Members of Parliament.
Over 3,000 Plots Identified for Future Parking Development
According to officials, the DDA plans to identify more than 3,000 vacant plots within the next year for surface parking development across Delhi.
Out of these, 232 fully ready plots have already been shortlisted, which together can accommodate around 100,000 vehicles.
Tenders for these sites will be issued soon to begin large-scale implementation of the project.
Zone-Wise Distribution of Identified Plots
The identified plots are distributed across multiple zones of the capital:
- Dwarka Zone: 98 plots
- North Zone: 53 plots
- Rohini Zone: 30 plots
- East Zone: 28 plots
- South Zone: 23 plots
This zonal planning aims to ensure balanced parking infrastructure across Delhi.
Free Morning Access to DDA Parks Proposed
In a citizen-friendly move, the Lieutenant Governor directed the DDA to ensure that all public parks remain open from 6 AM to 10 AM daily.
Even parks with entry fees will allow free access during morning hours, enabling residents to use green spaces without restrictions during peak morning time.
Focus on Encroachment, Traffic and Urban Management
During the meeting, Members of Parliament raised concerns over:
- Illegal encroachments
- Traffic congestion
- Misuse of vacant land
Officials stated that MPs assured full cooperation to help the DDA address encroachment issues across the city.
The discussions also covered parking shortages, land utilization, park maintenance, and improving public access to green spaces.
Strong Push for Urban Infrastructure Development
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena emphasized the need to accelerate housing, land management, and civic infrastructure projects in line with Delhi’s growing urban demands.
The initiative aims to improve:
- Traffic management
- Public parking availability
- Efficient use of vacant government land
- Better access to urban parks
The proposed mega parking initiative by the Delhi Development Authority marks one of the largest efforts to ease parking congestion in the capital. With thousands of plots under consideration and a capacity target of one lakh vehicles, the project is expected to significantly improve urban mobility and reduce on-street parking pressure in Delhi.
