Delhi: The government of Delhi is actively considering the construction of new underpasses beneath railway lines to improve connectivity and reduce travel distance across the city. The initiative aims to significantly ease traffic congestion and enhance daily commuter convenience.
The proposal includes multiple key locations such as Anand Vihar, Kadkardooma, and Nizamuddin, while the Mukarba Chowk underpass is also nearing completion and is expected to be opened to the public soon.
Study Ordered for New Underpass Projects
The government has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to conduct a detailed study and submit a report identifying potential railway crossings where underpasses can be constructed.
A major focus is on improving connectivity between densely populated and high-traffic areas by creating direct routes under railway lines.
Key Proposed Underpass Locations
Among the most important proposals under consideration are:
- Anand Vihar Railway Station to Kadkardooma connectivity
- Expansion of the existing underpass at Nizamuddin Railway Station for better access to Nizamuddin East
- Additional locations identified by the PWD for future development
These projects are expected to reduce long detours and significantly improve traffic flow in surrounding areas.
Mukarba Chowk Underpass Near Completion
The Mukarba Chowk railway underpass is in its final stage of completion, with only about 2% of work remaining. Once operational, it is expected to reduce travel distance by nearly 1.5 kilometers for daily commuters, providing major relief to local residents.
The project is considered a key milestone in improving urban mobility in the region.
Centre-State Coordination Boosts Infrastructure Push
Officials noted that improved coordination between the central and state governments has made it easier for railway-related infrastructure projects to move forward. The Railway Department is reportedly cooperating by providing land access where required.
This collaboration is expected to accelerate multiple urban infrastructure projects across Delhi.
Expansion of Underpass Network Under Review
According to PWD sources, a broader study is underway to identify additional railway stretches where underpasses can be constructed in the future.
The government is also considering widening the existing underpass near Nizamuddin Railway Station to further improve traffic movement in the area.
Focus on Long-Term Traffic Relief
The initiative is part of a larger strategy to reduce traffic congestion and improve last-mile connectivity in Delhi. Officials believe that strategically placed underpasses can significantly cut travel time and reduce pressure on major road networks.
With several projects under planning and execution, Delhi is set to see major improvements in its urban transport infrastructure in the coming years.
