New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has inaugurated a new Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Field Training and Demonstration Centre at the Burari plains in Delhi. The facility, aimed at enhancing national preparedness for radiological and nuclear emergencies, was inaugurated on May 6, 2026, by Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO.
A Centre Designed for Advanced CBRN Preparedness
The newly established centre is envisioned as a CBRN Centre of Excellence, equipped with advanced infrastructure and modern training systems. It will play a key role in strengthening India’s capability to respond to complex hazardous situations involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.
Key features of the centre include:
- Dedicated radiological and nuclear test bed facility
- Heavy ion research facility
- Emergency medical response systems
- Real-time field response units

Part of DRDO’s CBRN Excellence Initiative
The facility is part of the upcoming CBRN Centre of Excellence under the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS). It is designed to provide structured and hands-on training to personnel involved in emergency response and disaster management.
The initiative will support responders from:
- Ministry of Defence
- Ministry of Home Affairs
- National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
- Other agencies engaged in CBRN preparedness and crisis response
Focus on Training and Capacity Building
Through specialised training programmes, workshops, and simulation exercises, the centre aims to:
- Develop skilled CBRN response specialists
- Strengthen frontline emergency preparedness
- Integrate latest technologies and techniques into response systems
- Enhance coordination among multiple agencies during crises
INMAS will also play a key role in training the next generation of experts to ensure continuous knowledge development in the field.
