New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has completed all preliminary work for this advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Agni-VI Missile, marking a crucial step toward strengthening India’s long-range strategic capabilities.

The announcement was made by DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat at a national security summit, highlighting that execution will begin immediately once clearance is granted.

DRDO Confirms Full Preparedness for Agni-VI Missile

India’s premier defence research agency, DRDO, has confirmed that it is fully ready to begin the development phase of the Agni-VI missile.

Dr. Samir V. Kamat clearly stated that the organisation is waiting for a policy-level decision from the central government before starting the project.

He emphasized: “We are ready whenever the government gives us the go-ahead.”

This statement confirms that:

  • Technical groundwork is complete
  • Design and planning stages are already finished
  • Execution can begin immediately after approval

What is Agni-VI Missile?

Agni-VI is expected to be India’s most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile. It is being developed as part of the Agni missile series to enhance long-range strike capabilities.

According to available official and defence data:

  • It will be an ICBM with a range possibly exceeding 10,000 km
  • It may carry multiple nuclear warheads (MIRV technology)
  • It will be capable of targeting multiple locations simultaneously
  • Designed for improved survivability and accuracy

This makes Agni-VI a key part of India’s strategic deterrence system.

What are the Features of Agni-VI Missile

Experts and defence sources suggest that Agni-VI could include several next-generation technologies:

1. MIRV Technology

  • Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles
  • One missile can hit several targets

2. MaRV (Maneuverable Re-entry Vehicles)

  • Ability to change trajectory
  • Helps avoid missile defence systems

3. Advanced Stealth Features

  • Radar-absorbing materials
  • Decoys to confuse enemy systems

4. Longer Operational Range

  • Much higher than current Agni-V
  • Global reach capability

These features will significantly boost India’s strategic strike power.

Why Government Approval is Crucial for Agni-VI Missile

Even though DRDO is ready, the project cannot begin without official approval.

This is because:

  • ICBMs are part of strategic nuclear deterrence
  • They have major geopolitical impact
  • Decisions involve diplomacy, global treaties, and national security policy

Top-level political clearance ensures that:

  • The project aligns with India’s defence doctrine
  • International obligations are considered
  • Strategic balance is maintained

Strong Technological Foundation

DRDO’s confidence is based on decades of experience in missile development.

India has already developed successful systems like:

  • Agni-III
  • Agni-IV
  • Agni-V

Key technologies already mastered include:

  • Solid rocket propulsion
  • Precision guidance systems
  • Heat-resistant materials
  • Re-entry vehicle design

Because of this strong base, Agni-VI development is expected to:

  • Take less time
  • Have lower risk
  • Be more cost-effective

Progress in Hypersonic Missile Programs

Along with Agni-VI, DRDO also shared updates on hypersonic weapons.

India is currently working on:

  • Hypersonic Glide Missile
  • Hypersonic Cruise Missile

The glide missile is more advanced and may be tested soon.

Key Difference:

  • Glide missile → Uses booster, then glides at high speed
  • Cruise missile → Uses scramjet engine throughout flight

These technologies represent the future of modern warfare.

What is the Importance of Agni-VI Missile

Agni-VI is not just another missile—it is a major strategic upgrade.

It will:

  • Strengthen India’s nuclear deterrence
  • Provide global strike capability
  • Improve second-strike capability
  • Enhance national security

It also places India among top nations with advanced ICBM technology.
