Dispur: In a key pre-election administrative move, the Election Commission of India has ordered the immediate transfer and posting of five IPS officers in Assam as part of preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections.
The directive, issued from Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi, directs the Assam government to execute the postings immediately to ensure neutrality in law-and-order administration before the polls.
Five IPS Officers Given New District Responsibilities
According to the Election Commission’s order, five IPS officers have been assigned new postings as Senior Superintendents of Police in different districts.
New Postings Ordered
- Somalin Shubhdarshini (2019 batch) — SSP, Majuli
- R Sheetal Kumar (2020 batch) — SSP, South Salmara
- Anchal Chauhan (2020 batch) — SSP, Sadiya
- Sudhakar Singh (2013 batch) — SSP, Chirang
- Mohan Lal Meena (2016 batch) — SSP, Dhemaji
Immediate Compliance Ordered
The Commission has directed the Assam government to ensure that all transfers are implemented without delay.
A compliance report must confirm that all officers have taken charge by 11 am on March 17.
Transferred Officers Barred from Election Duties
The order also clearly states that officers shifted out of current assignments must not be given any election-related responsibilities until completion of the electoral process.
This is intended to maintain impartiality in the conduct of elections.
Directive Sent to Assam CEO
A copy of the order has also been forwarded to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam for immediate monitoring and compliance.
Why ECI Orders Such Transfers
Before elections, the Election Commission often reassigns officers holding sensitive field positions to:
- ensure administrative neutrality
- avoid local influence
- strengthen law-and-order preparedness
- maintain voter confidence
District police chiefs play a crucial role in election security.
Administrative Importance of the Move
The districts involved include geographically sensitive and strategically important regions, making police leadership critical during election season.
The postings indicate early institutional preparations for a tightly monitored Assembly election cycle in Assam.
