New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited, a Maharatna PSU, has approved the development of 700 MW of solar power projects with an investment of approximately ₹3,800 crore across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. The company shared this update in a regulatory filing to stock exchanges on April 14.

The initiative marks a significant expansion of GAIL’s renewable energy portfolio, reinforcing its focus on clean energy transition and long-term sustainability.

600 MW Solar Project with Battery Storage in Uttar Pradesh

As part of the plan, GAIL will develop a 600 MW solar power project along with a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.

The project will primarily cater to the captive energy requirements of GAIL’s Petrochemical Plant located in Pata, Auraiya district, ensuring stable and sustainable energy supply for industrial operations.

100 MW Solar Project Planned in Maharashtra

In addition, GAIL will set up a 100 MW solar power project with a 22 MWh BESS in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district (formerly Aurangabad), Maharashtra.

This project will support the captive energy needs of GAIL’s PDH-PP plant located in Usar, Raigad district, further strengthening the company’s integrated energy infrastructure.

Renewable Capacity to Cross 1,000 MW Post Commissioning

GAIL Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta stated that the company’s installed renewable energy capacity will rise significantly to over 1,000 MW, up from the current 147 MW, once these projects are commissioned.

He added that the expansion reflects GAIL’s commitment to aligning business growth with environmental responsibility and ensuring long-term energy security for the country.

Strengthening India’s Energy Transition

The new projects are part of GAIL’s broader strategy to balance conventional hydrocarbon operations with renewable energy investments. The company aims to play a key role in India’s ongoing energy transition by building a diversified and sustainable energy portfolio.
