New Delhi: India’s indigenous GPS NavIC satellite launches are set to strengthen the country’s home-grown navigation system. The Government of India has announced plans to launch four new NavIC satellites to restore the full capability of the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). The move follows technical issues with some earlier satellites and is aimed at improving navigation, defence, transportation, disaster management, and strategic applications across India.
The announcement was made by the Department of Space in Parliament, confirming that corrective measures have already been implemented for future satellite missions.
What Is GPS NavIC Satellite
NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India’s own regional satellite navigation system developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It provides accurate positioning, navigation, and timing services across India and up to 1,500 kilometres beyond its borders. NavIC is India’s answer to global navigation systems such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou.

Why Is India Launching Four New NavIC Satellites
The Government of India plans to launch four new NavIC satellites to restore the full seven-satellite constellation. According to Union Minister of State for Space Dr. Jitendra Singh, NVS-03 will be launched first after incorporating all corrective measures identified following the NVS-02 mission. It will be followed by NVS-04 and NVS-05, while one more satellite will complete the seven-satellite NavIC base layer. The government has not yet announced the launch dates.
What is the Need of GPS NavIC Satellite Launches
India’s first-generation NavIC satellites were launched between 2013 and 2018. Over time, several satellites experienced atomic clock failures, reducing the system’s navigation capability. The situation became more serious after the atomic clock aboard IRNSS-1F stopped functioning in 2026, leaving only three satellites currently providing navigation support.
GPS NavIC Satellite Launches: What Improvements Have Been Made
Following the NVS-02 anomaly, ISRO introduced several technical improvements. The government confirmed that all corrective measures have been successfully implemented and validated on the CMS-03 satellite. These improvements will also be used in the upcoming NavIC satellites equipped with bi-propellant propulsion systems.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Space Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed that four NavIC satellite launches are planned to restore the complete constellation. The Department of Space also stated that all technical improvements identified after earlier missions have already been incorporated into future satellites.
