Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday inaugurated the 87th Inter-State Junior and Youth National Table Tennis Championship at the Multipurpose Sports Hall, Parade Ground, Dehradun. The prestigious national-level tournament is being hosted in the state for the first time, marking a significant milestone for Uttarakhand’s growing sports ecosystem.

In a spirited gesture to motivate young athletes, the Chief Minister also played a game of table tennis during the inauguration ceremony. His participation was aimed at boosting the morale of players who have gathered from across the country to compete in the championship.

Welcoming participants, Dhami expressed pride in Uttarakhand hosting such a major event for the first time. He thanked the Table Tennis Federation of India for entrusting the state with the responsibility of organizing the championship.

“Through sports, values such as discipline, patience, teamwork, and dedication are nurtured, inspiring youth to excel in all aspects of life,” Dhami said.

Dhami emphasized that table tennis is a demanding sport requiring speed, balance, precision, and mental strength. He noted that the game helps players develop quick decision-making abilities, strategic thinking, and confidence in handling challenges.

The Chief Minister credited the rise in India’s sports culture to initiatives led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Programs like the Khelo India and Fit India Movement have played a crucial role in promoting sports nationwide.
He also praised the performance of Indian athletes in international events such as the Olympics, Paralympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, attributing their success to improved infrastructure and government support.
Uttarakhand Emerging as a Sports Hub
Dhami reiterated the state government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and nurturing talent. Referring to the success of the 38th National Games, he said Uttarakhand is rapidly emerging not just as “Devbhoomi” but also as a sports hub.
He highlighted that local athletes delivered an outstanding performance by winning 103 medals, setting a new benchmark for the state.

Concluding his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the true essence of sports:
“Winning or losing is not as important as the spirit, discipline, and self-confidence of players, which ultimately make them true champions.”
