New Delhi: Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden is set to get a modern 250-bed super-speciality-cum-trauma block after the Delhi Cabinet approved the project at a cost of ₹244.87 crore.
The new facility will be constructed within the existing GTB Hospital campus under Phase IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The project is aimed at strengthening emergency, trauma and specialised healthcare services in east Delhi, where GTB Hospital caters to a heavy patient load.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who chaired the Cabinet meeting, said the new block will provide critical patients with access to 24×7 emergency and trauma care once it becomes operational.
250-Bed Block to Expand Critical Care
The proposed facility will cover 22,550 square metres and will comprise a basement, ground floor and six upper floors.
The building has been planned to bring several critical and specialised healthcare services under one facility. It will include 250 beds, 48 specialist OPD rooms and nine modern operation theatres.
The infrastructure is designed to support patients requiring emergency treatment as well as those needing specialised medical and surgical care.
The basement will accommodate a blood bank and laboratory, while the ground floor will house a 24×7 emergency department along with diagnostic facilities.
This arrangement is expected to make emergency assessment and treatment more accessible, particularly for patients arriving at the hospital in critical condition.
72-Bed ICU Among Key Facilities
A major component of the new trauma block will be its intensive care infrastructure.
The second floor will have a 72-bed ICU, providing additional capacity for patients requiring continuous monitoring and critical care. The expansion is particularly significant for a major government hospital handling a substantial number of patients from east Delhi.
The fourth and fifth floors will accommodate 175 general and private ward beds. This will increase the hospital’s capacity to admit patients following emergency treatment, surgery or specialist consultation.
The sixth floor will be used for administrative and training-related facilities, including offices, classrooms and a laboratory for training.
Nine Operation Theatres Planned
The proposed block will also include nine modern operation theatres, strengthening GTB Hospital’s capacity to undertake surgical procedures.
Along with the operation theatres, the presence of specialist OPD rooms will allow patients to access specialised consultations within the new facility.
The combination of emergency services, diagnostics, intensive care, operation theatres and ward facilities is intended to create an integrated treatment setup for critical and specialised cases.
Why the Project Matters for East Delhi
Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital is described as the only major government hospital in east Delhi, and its existing services cater to a large patient population.
For patients requiring emergency or trauma treatment, timely access to specialised facilities can be particularly important. The proposed block is therefore expected to add capacity across several stages of treatment—from emergency admission and diagnosis to surgery, intensive care and hospitalisation.
The 24×7 emergency department, in particular, will provide round-the-clock access to emergency services within the new block.
The additional ICU and ward capacity could also help accommodate patients who need prolonged medical supervision after receiving emergency or specialised treatment.
Project Under PMSSY Phase IV
The ₹244.87-crore project will be developed under Phase IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, a central government programme focused on strengthening tertiary healthcare infrastructure and improving access to specialised medical services.
By adding a dedicated super-speciality-cum-trauma block to the existing GTB Hospital campus, the project will expand the healthcare infrastructure available to patients in the region.
The planned facilities also combine patient care with medical training infrastructure. Offices, classrooms and a training laboratory on the sixth floor will support the educational and professional requirements associated with the facility.

The project represents a major expansion of emergency and specialised healthcare infrastructure at one of Delhi’s key government hospitals.
