Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government on Monday appointed seven new members to the Gujarat Public Service Commission (GPSC), filling long-pending vacancies in the commission. The appointments are aimed at strengthening the commission and expediting the recruitment process through competitive examinations.
The General Administration Department (GAD) issued separate appointment orders for the seven members. The appointments come amid delays in recruitment for several government posts conducted through the GPSC.
Seven New Members Appointed to GPSC
The Gujarat government has appointed a mix of serving and retired officials along with a non-government member to the commission.
The newly appointed members are:
- K. L. Bachani, IAS
- K. C. Sampat, IAS
- K. S. Vasava, retired IAS officer
- Mayur Mehta, IAS
- H. J. Prajapati, IAS
- Dipakkumar Rathod, retired Superintending Engineer
- Dr Shishir Trivedi
Of the seven appointees, Bachani, Sampat, Mehta and Prajapati are serving IAS officers, while Vasava is a retired bureaucrat. Rathod is a retired Superintending Engineer and Trivedi is a non-government member.
GPSC Recruitment Process Expected to Speed Up
The appointments fill vacancies that had remained unoccupied in the commission for a considerable period. Officials expect the addition of members to help speed up the recruitment process, particularly the interview stage.
The GPSC conducts recruitment examinations for various government posts. Several examinations have been held in recent years, but recruitment for a number of posts has remained pending.
The new appointments are expected to help the commission handle pending recruitment-related work more efficiently.
Recruitment Delays Remain a Major Issue
The appointments come against the backdrop of persistent delays in filling vacancies in various Gujarat government departments through GPSC recruitment.
The pace of recruitment has faced scrutiny in the past, with the Gujarat High Court also raising concerns over delays in recruitment-related matters.
The issue has also been raised by opposition parties, while government job aspirants have held protests in recent years seeking faster recruitment and appointments to vacant posts.
GPSC Strengthened With New Members
With the appointment of seven members, the Gujarat government has moved to strengthen the composition of the commission and address the shortage of members.
The move is expected to support the GPSC in handling pending examinations, interviews and other stages of the recruitment process, with the broader objective of speeding up appointments to vacant government positions.
