Ahmedabad: Gujarat Science City has achieved a major milestone by crossing 1.43 crore visitors by May 2026, marking its transformation into one of India’s largest centres for science education and experiential learning.

Located in Ahmedabad, the facility was established on August 10, 1999, and has evolved significantly over the years into a multi-disciplinary science campus promoting innovation, scientific temper, and interactive learning.

Growth Driven by Vision for Experiential Science Learning

Officials said the expansion of Gujarat Science City reflects a long-term vision to shift science education from textbook-based learning to hands-on, experience-driven engagement.

Major development of the facility took place during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Chief Minister of Gujarat, focusing on modern scientific infrastructure and public education.

According to official data, more than 1.43 crore visitors have visited the science complex between 2006 and May 2026. The centre has become a popular destination for students, families, and science enthusiasts from across the country.

The growing footfall highlights Gujarat Science City’s rising role in science communication and public education.

The campus features several large-scale thematic zones, including:

Aquatic Gallery

  • 68 tanks showcasing 188 species
  • Over 11,600 fish including sharks
  • 28-metre-long shark tunnel
  • Marine ecosystems including Indian, Asian, and African zones
  • African penguins and 5D theatre

Astronomy and Space Science Gallery

  • 12,797 sq. metre facility
  • 172-seat hybrid planetarium
  • Telescope-based observation systems
  • 150+ space science exhibits

Robotics Gallery

  • 11,000 sq. metre space
  • 202 robots across 79 categories
  • Humanoid robots and VR/AR experiences

Planet Earth, Nature and Energy Parks Enhance Learning Experience

  • Planet Earth Gallery with exhibits on earthquakes, volcanoes, biodiversity, and human anatomy
  • Nature Park spread across 20 acres with butterfly garden, mist forest, and extinct species sculptures
  • Energy Education Park promoting environmental awareness and energy conservation
  • Life Science Park featuring river ecosystem, aviary, and tissue culture lab

  • Multimedia musical fountain with large water-screen projections

The Gujarat government has announced further expansion of the facility, including:

  • Aviation and Defence Gallery
  • Human and Biological Science Gallery
  • Digital future-themed exhibition space

These additions aim to introduce advanced interactive learning on modern defence systems, aviation technology, and human biology.

Support from State Leadership and National Visits

The development of the centre has been overseen by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia as part of Gujarat’s broader science innovation agenda.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the facility twice, in 2017 and 2023, reviewing its progress and future expansion plans.
