In a major educational reform, the Gujarat Education Department has officially approved the integration of vocational subjects into the general stream curriculum for Classes 11 and 12. The rollout will begin from the academic years 2026-27 for Class 11 and 2027-28 for Class 12, aligning the state’s education system with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Empowering Students with Flexible, Career-Focused Learning Paths

The new curriculum structure will include six vocational subjects under Group 4:

  • Yoga
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Fine Arts
  • Music
  • Computer Studies
  • Other approved vocational courses

These subjects will be offered as optional electives, allowing students to tailor their education based on their passions, career goals, and aptitude. The move is aimed at making learning more holistic and practical, equipping students with real-world skills.

Reform Driven by Leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel

The decision was taken under the leadership and vision of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendrabhai Patel, with an emphasis on equipping students with job-ready skills. Minister for Tribal Development, Primary, Secondary, and Adult Education Mr. Praful Pansheriya confirmed the development on social media platform X, stating that this integration is a key step towards fulfilling the goals of the NEP 2020.

Alignment with National Education Policy 2020

The NEP 2020 has underscored the need to incorporate vocational subjects into mainstream education to enhance employability, creativity, and adaptability. Gujarat’s decision to implement this reform ensures that students in government and private schools have equal access to skill-based education, preparing them for both higher education and direct entry into the workforce.

A Step Toward Holistic, Inclusive and Future-Ready Education

This move is expected to reduce academic rigidity and allow students to explore their interests beyond conventional academic subjects. It will also encourage the development of life skills, mental wellness through yoga, artistic expression through music and fine arts, and technical know-how through computer education.
