Bengaluru: A 2016-batch Karnataka-cadre IAS officer, Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar, has reportedly become untraceable in Bengaluru, with police verifying his movements after his mobile phone was switched off at Kempegowda International Airport.
According to reports, Gangwar’s movements were traced up to the Bengaluru airport. Police are examining his travel records and other available leads to determine where he travelled and where he is currently staying. The latest information indicates that he travelled from Bengaluru to Delhi, but authorities have not yet been able to establish his whereabouts there or make contact with him.
The development has prompted police to verify whether the officer voluntarily travelled to Delhi and why he subsequently became unreachable.
Importantly, no missing-person complaint has reportedly been filed by his family or relatives so far.
Karnataka Government Aware of Officer Being Untraceable
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday said the state government was aware of reports concerning the officer being untraceable for the past two to three days.
Kharge said authorities were verifying the officer’s whereabouts and that no formal missing complaint had been received from his family.
He indicated that, at this stage, the government did not have evidence establishing where the officer was.
The minister’s statement comes as police continue to examine the officer’s travel details and other available leads.
Police Trace Movement Up to Bengaluru Airport
According to the information available so far, Gangwar’s mobile phone was switched off after he reached or was last traced at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.
Police initially began checking whether he had travelled from Bengaluru towards Delhi. Subsequent investigation into his travel records has reportedly indicated that he did travel to Delhi.
However, the investigation has not yet established his exact location in Delhi.
Authorities are therefore examining travel records and other information to establish the sequence of events after his arrival at the airport.
Police are also seeking to determine whether Gangwar has contacted anyone since his phone became unreachable.
No Missing Complaint Filed by Family So Far
Despite the officer reportedly remaining out of contact with his family, authorities have said that neither his family nor anyone else has filed a missing complaint so far.
This distinction is significant because police are presently verifying the circumstances surrounding his absence rather than treating the case as a formally registered missing-person investigation.
The authorities are trying to ascertain whether Gangwar has intentionally remained out of contact or whether there is another reason for his phone being switched off and his whereabouts becoming unclear.
Reports of ED Raid Surface
The officer’s reported absence has also come amid reports of an Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid, although authorities have not established any connection between the ED action and Gangwar becoming unreachable.
At present, there is no confirmed information that the reported disappearance is linked to the ED action.
Police are yet to establish whether the two developments are connected or whether they are coincidental. Any such connection will depend on the outcome of the ongoing verification.
Therefore, the ED angle should presently be treated as a reported circumstance and not as an established reason for the officer’s absence.
Who Is IAS Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar?
Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar is a 2016-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Karnataka cadre. Publicly available civil-service records identify him as a direct recruit to the IAS through the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
His officer identification number is listed as 01KN115K09. Available records identify his home state as Uttar Pradesh.
Gangwar is an engineering graduate and has a B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, according to publicly available profiles. He was selected for the IAS through the direct-recruitment route.
There is a minor discrepancy in publicly available records regarding his date of birth. One recent profile lists it as 12 October 1985, while civil-list-derived records and another officer profile list it as 10 December 1985. For that reason, the date should be treated cautiously until confirmed from an official current civil list.
Current Posting: Director, MSME Department
Gangwar was transferred in the Karnataka government’s June 2026 bureaucratic reshuffle and appointed Director, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Commerce and Industries Department, Bengaluru.
He replaced Sateesha B.C., IAS (2012), who was moved to the post of Commissioner, Agriculture Department.
Before the latest posting, Gangwar had been serving as Joint Managing Director of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), Bengaluru. The June 2026 reshuffle placed him in charge of the MSME wing under the Commerce and Industries Department.
A recent officer profile records his appointment as Director, MSME, from 19 June 2026.
Earlier Role in Karnataka Urban Water Supply Board
Before moving to the MSME department, Gangwar served as Joint Managing Director, Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board.
According to civil-list-derived information, he had been serving in the KUWSDB post since January 2024.
His tenure at the urban water supply board was among the significant assignments in his Karnataka cadre career before the June 2026 reshuffle.
From Bidar Zilla Panchayat to Administrative Training Institute
Gangwar has also held field and administrative assignments earlier in his career.
In February 2021, the Karnataka government transferred him from his position as Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Panchayat, Bidar, and posted him as Joint Director (Training), Administrative Training Institute (ATI), Mysuru. The government notification recorded him as a Karnataka-cadre IAS officer of the 2016 batch.
His stint at ATI Mysuru also saw him participate in government training programmes. A National Institute of Disaster Management report from 2022 identifies Gangwar as Joint Director (Training), ATI, Mysuru, and records his participation in a programme focused on child-centric disaster risk reduction.
Earlier Central Government Assignment
Before his Karnataka field assignments, Gangwar also served as an Assistant Secretary at the Centre during his early IAS career.
Publicly available service records indicate that he served as Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises during 2018. His career thereafter included field-level administrative responsibilities in Karnataka.
His publicly documented career has therefore included both central-government exposure and several Karnataka cadre assignments.

What Police Are Checking Now
The immediate focus of the authorities is to establish Gangwar’s whereabouts and understand the circumstances in which he became unreachable.
Police are reportedly examining his travel records, including his movement from Bengaluru to Delhi, while also checking other available leads. The officer’s phone being switched off at the airport has emerged as a key point in the timeline.
At present, authorities have not publicly established that Gangwar has been abducted, that he is in danger, or that any crime has taken place.
Similarly, the reported ED raid has not been officially linked to his absence.
The Karnataka government and police are therefore continuing to verify the facts before drawing any conclusion about why the IAS officer became unreachable.
What We Know So Far
The case remains under verification, with several important aspects still unclear. Gangwar is reported to have travelled from Bengaluru to Delhi, but his exact location remains unconfirmed. His family has reportedly not lodged a missing complaint, while the government has acknowledged the reports and said it is verifying his whereabouts.
For now, the key question for investigators is where Gyanendra Kumar Gangwar is and why he has remained out of contact.
Any possible link between his reported absence and the ED action will also need to be established through official investigation rather than speculation.
