Jammu/New Delhi: Dr Raghav Langer, Secretary (Joint Secretary level) of the National Medical Commission (NMC), represented India at the 114th Annual Meeting of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) held in Baltimore from April 30 to May 2, 2026.
He was accompanied by Dr M. K. Ramesh, President of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), NMC.
The prestigious gathering, themed “Building Trust, Advancing Regulation,” brought together medical regulators and healthcare leaders from across the United States to discuss key issues relating to medical regulation, licensing, ethics, patient safety and the growing role of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
First-Ever Invitation to NMC as Special Invitee
This was the first time the National Medical Commission was invited to attend the FSMB Annual Meeting as a special invitee, underscoring India’s expanding role in global medical regulation.
The NMC currently oversees one of the world’s largest medical education ecosystems, with 818 medical collegesacross India.
During the meeting, the Indian delegation interacted with key FSMB leaders, including:

The NMC delegation also visited several leading medical regulatory and academic institutions, including:
- National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), Philadelphia

- FSMB headquarters in Washington, D.C.
At NBME, discussions with Dr Peter J. Katsufrakis focused on:
- Licensing examination systems
- Assessment frameworks
- Faculty development

- Modern testing technologies
NBME is internationally known for co-developing the United States Medical Licensing Examination in partnership with FSMB.
Discussions with ECFMG on Opportunities for Indian Medical Graduates
On the sidelines, the delegation met Dr Eric Holmboe, President and CEO of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

ECFMG certification remains a crucial requirement for international medical graduates seeking entry into accredited residency programmes in the United States.

The NMC delegation also held meetings with representatives of the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA), including Chair Ms Nicole Krishnaswami.
Interactions were also held with doctors of Indian origin serving in regulatory roles across U.S. state medical boards.
