Narmadapuram (Madhya Pradesh): Narmadapuram district is witnessing a series of impactful community-driven initiatives focused on road safety and environmental protection under the leadership of IAS officer Somesh Mishra, a 2013 batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre and current District Collector.
From accident prevention measures to nature conservation campaigns, the administration is working to build a more aware, responsible, and participatory civic ecosystem.
Project Suraksha: Strengthening Road Safety in Narmadapuram
One of the key initiatives, Project Suraksha, has been launched to reduce road accidents and save lives through awareness and preventive action.
The campaign focuses on addressing common causes of road accidents, especially involving slow-moving and rural vehicles.
Key measures include:
- Mandatory installation of reflective radium strips on tractor-trolleys for better visibility during night and fog
- Enforcement of Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signage to prevent rear-end collisions
- Awareness drives promoting helmet and seatbelt usage
- CPR training sessions to improve emergency response capabilities
Through messages like “Radium Lagayein, Jeevan Bachayein”, the initiative has turned road safety into a public movement rather than just an enforcement exercise.

Neer Pakheru Abhiyan: Protecting Birds and Promoting Environmental Responsibility
Another major initiative, Neer Pakheru Abhiyan, has been launched during the summer season to protect birds from extreme heat conditions.
Under this campaign:
- Schools, government offices, and citizens are encouraged to place water bowls and grain containers in public spaces
- Use of earthen pots and reusable containers is promoted for sustainability
- Public participation is encouraged to support wildlife and environmental balance
The campaign spreads awareness through the message: “Pyaase panchiyon ko paani pilayein, aao is aadat ko sanskar banayein”, promoting compassion and environmental sensitivity among citizens, especially students.
Community Participation at the Core
A key feature of both initiatives is strong local participation. Instead of relying only on administrative enforcement, citizens, schools, and institutions are actively involved in implementation.
This approach has helped transform both campaigns into people’s movements, encouraging collective responsibility and long-term behavioral change.
