India Gets Its First Non-GMO High-Expansion Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed; VP Radhakrishnan Launches It in Andhra Pradesh

The indigenous hybrid is aimed at reducing dependence on imported popcorn maize technology, while strengthening farmer-industry linkages and agricultural self-reliance.

Musunuru, Andhra Pradesh: Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Monday launched what has been described as India’s first non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed at the Gourmet Popcornica facility in Musunuru, Eluru district, marking a new development in the country’s popcorn maize cultivation and processing ecosystem.

The Vice President said the indigenous hybrid demonstrated how technology, innovation and domestic seed development could support self-reliance in agriculture and reduce dependence on imported hybrid technologies.

From Imported Technology to an Indigenous Hybrid

Addressing farmers and agricultural stakeholders, Radhakrishnan noted that India had previously relied on imported hybrid technology for high-quality popcorn maize.

He said the development of an indigenous hybrid could help reduce this dependence and contribute to foreign-exchange savings, while creating opportunities for Indian agricultural products in global markets.

“A small beginning should lead to a big vision and a big dream,” the Vice President said, highlighting the potential of the initiative.

Popcorn Maize as a Crop Type

Popcorn maize is a specialised type of Zea mays bred for its ability to expand when heated. High-expansion hybrids produce larger popped kernels, making expansion volume a key quality parameter in popcorn production.

Farmer-Industry Partnership at the Centre

The initiative involves farmers across multiple states and seeks to connect popcorn maize cultivation with processing and market access.

According to the Vice President, the Gourmet Popcornica initiative involves:

  • More than 17,500 farmers
  • Farmers from eight states
  • Nearly 40,000 acres under cultivation
  • Linkages between farmers and the popcorn processing enterprise

Radhakrishnan said such partnerships could create income opportunities for farming families while strengthening domestic agricultural value chains.

Why the New Seed Matters

The newly launched hybrid is described as non-GMO and high-expansion, meaning it is intended for popcorn production where kernel expansion after heating is an important quality characteristic.

The development is significant for India’s popcorn sector because it brings seed development closer to domestic cultivation and processing requirements.

Key features

  • Non-GMO: The hybrid does not involve genetically modified traits.
  • High-expansion: Developed for popcorn kernels that expand substantially when heated.
  • Indigenous development: Intended to reduce dependence on imported hybrid technology.
  • Farmer linkage: Connected to a wider network of popcorn maize cultivators.
  • Market potential: The initiative is being positioned for both domestic consumption and potential global markets.

Vice President Highlights Technology in Agriculture

Radhakrishnan stressed that India’s agricultural future would depend on combining the experience of farmers with technology, scientific innovation and entrepreneurship.

He highlighted several Union government initiatives supporting farmers, including PM-KISAN, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission and Namo Drone Didi.

He also emphasised the role of indigenous agricultural solutions in advancing the broader goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Gourmet Popcornica’s Role

The launch took place at the Gourmet Popcornica facility in Musunuru. The company says its popcorn journey began in 2014 and that it subsequently moved into popcorn maize cultivation in Andhra Pradesh, opening a bulk corn processing facility at Nuzvid in 2018 and a popcorn storage and production facility at Musunuru in 2023.

During his visit, the Vice President toured the factory and cold-storage facility and was briefed on maize processing, quality control, packaging and storage.

Farmers Felicitated at the Event

The Vice President also felicitated high-performing farmers from Andhra Pradesh and seven other states, along with partners associated with the Gourmet Popcornica initiative.

The programme was attended by Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and state Ministers Nara Lokesh, Kinjarapu Atchannaidu and Kolusu Parthasarathy, among other officials and representatives.

Radhakrishnan said India’s vision of becoming a developed nation would be built through farmers, scientific innovation and indigenous enterprise, with self-reliance strengthened through developments at the field level.

The Musunuru launch therefore brings together seed innovation, farmer participation and food processing around a specialised agricultural crop, while adding another example of India’s push towards greater domestic capability in agriculture.
