New Delhi: India and Japan are set to give a fresh impetus to their defence partnership, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi in New Delhi on August 20, 2026.
The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening strategic trust, expanding defence cooperation and identifying new areas of collaboration, particularly in maritime security and defence equipment and technology.
Maritime Security and Defence Technology on Agenda
The two ministers are expected to exchange views on strengthening cooperation in key areas of defence and security.

Japanese Defence Minister Visits Western Naval Command
Koizumi, who is on his maiden visit to India, visited the Western Naval Command in Mumbai on August 19 ahead of his meeting with Rajnath Singh.
During the visit, he held discussions with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan.
The Japanese delegation was briefed on the Indian Navy’s:
- Roles and responsibilities
- Operational capabilities
- Maritime security preparedness
- Naval operations
Koizumi also inspected a Guard of Honour at the Western Naval Command.
From Gaurav Stambh to INS Chennai
The Japanese Defence Minister began his Mumbai engagements by laying a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard.
He subsequently visited INS Chennai, India’s indigenously built guided-missile destroyer.
The visit provided an opportunity for the Japanese delegation to gain a closer understanding of India’s indigenous naval capabilities.

The two-day visit by Japan’s Defence Minister reflects the growing momentum in bilateral defence cooperation and the intention of both countries to expand their strategic partnership.

Visit Follows India-Japan Annual Summit
Koizumi’s visit comes weeks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visited New Delhi for the Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During the summit, India and Japan agreed to deepen cooperation in defence and security, providing further political momentum to the defence ministers’ upcoming discussions.
The latest engagement is expected to build on this momentum and translate the broader strategic understanding between the two countries into greater maritime cooperation, defence technology partnerships and Make-in-India opportunities.
