Ladakh: The Indian Army operational capability demonstration in Drass showcased a range of modern mobility, reconnaissance and surveillance systems in the high-altitude Ladakh region. The demonstration at Matayen, Drass, included specialised vehicles, all-terrain platforms and advanced drone systems designed to support troops in difficult terrain.

The display came around the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations, when India remembered the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War. Official government information says the occasion also highlights how lessons from Kargil continue to strengthen India’s military preparedness.

Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026: What Did the Indian Army Display in Drass

According to information shared from the demonstration at Matayen, the Indian Army showcased equipment focused mainly on mobility, reconnaissance and surveillance.

The display included several types of specialised military vehicles as well as unmanned aerial systems. Among the systems showcased were:

  • Special Mobility Vehicles (SMVs) – Designed to improve troop and equipment movement in challenging areas.
  • Rough Terrain Vehicles – Platforms intended to operate where normal vehicles may struggle.
  • Chetak All-Terrain Vehicles – Vehicles suited to difficult and uneven terrain.
  • High Mobility Reconnaissance Vehicles – Designed to support observation and reconnaissance operations.
  • Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles – Mobile platforms that can help troops respond rapidly.
  • Drones and Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS) – Aerial platforms useful for surveillance, reconnaissance and other operational roles.

The demonstration gave a glimpse of how mobility and unmanned technologies are becoming increasingly important for operations in difficult mountain environments.

Why Is High-Altitude Mobility Important in Ladakh

Areas such as Drass and Kargil present difficult conditions for military operations. Mountainous terrain, high altitude and harsh weather can make the movement of soldiers, equipment and supplies challenging. This makes specialised mobility platforms particularly useful.

Vehicles capable of travelling across rough terrain can help military units move personnel and equipment to areas that may be difficult for conventional vehicles to reach.

Reconnaissance vehicles can also help troops observe surrounding areas while maintaining greater mobility.

Another important part of the Drass display was the presence of advanced drones and Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems. Drone technology has become increasingly important for modern armed forces because unmanned systems can provide information from areas that may be difficult or risky for personnel to access.

Depending on their configuration and mission, such platforms can support surveillance, reconnaissance and situational awareness.

The broader emphasis on innovation is also consistent with the government’s push for greater technological capability and self-reliance in defence. During the Kargil Vijay Diwas programme in Dras, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh linked India’s future military strength with innovation and Aatmanirbharta in defence.

Demonstration Comes Around 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas

The military display took place against the backdrop of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations in Drass. India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas every year on July 26 to remember the country’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War and honour the soldiers who fought in Operation Vijay. Kargil Vijay Diwas honours the courage, sacrifice and determination of the soldiers of Operation Vijay.

The government said the legacy of Kargil continues to strengthen India’s military preparedness and commitment to national security. Official broadcaster Akashvani reported that the 2026 commemorative events in Drass included tributes to soldiers, interactions with the families of fallen personnel, recollections from Kargil veterans and programmes at the Kargil War Memorial.

Defence Minister Says Forces Are Prepared for Challenges

During an event in Dras on July 25, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Indian Defence Forces remain fully prepared to face challenges. He paid tribute to the soldiers who secured India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War and said their courage, determination and patriotism continue to inspire both the armed forces and the country.

On July 26, Singh also highlighted India’s defence capabilities during the main Kargil Vijay Diwas programme and stressed the importance of progress, innovation and self-reliance in the defence sector.
