India observed the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on Sunday, remembering the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and several leaders paid tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during Operation Vijay.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to mark India’s victory in the Kargil conflict, when the Indian Armed Forces successfully pushed back Pakistani intruders from strategic mountain positions in Ladakh after nearly three months of intense fighting.
Nation Remembers the Heroes of Operation Vijay
The Kargil War reached its successful conclusion on July 26, 1999, when the Indian Army declared Operation Vijay complete after recapturing key peaks occupied by Pakistani forces. The victory remains one of the defining moments in India’s military history and is remembered for the extraordinary courage displayed by Indian soldiers in extremely difficult terrain and weather conditions.
To mark this year’s anniversary, the Indian Army organised a Shradhanjali Samaroh (wreath-laying ceremony) at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to address serving soldiers, veterans, and families of the fallen during the commemorative event.
President Murmu Salutes the Courage of Fallen Soldiers
President Droupadi Murmu paid homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives while defending the nation. In a message shared on X, she said the country would always remain indebted to the brave warriors who protected India’s sovereignty.
She described their courage, patriotism, and commitment to duty as shining examples of the Indian Army’s proud traditions. The President added that their sacrifices would continue to inspire future generations to serve the nation with dedication and a strong sense of responsibility.
Leaders Across Political Spectrum Pay Their Respects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War, saying the nation is grateful for their exceptional courage and unwavering commitment to protecting the country’s borders.
He said the bravery displayed by Indian soldiers under some of the toughest battlefield conditions continues to be a source of pride for every Indian and will inspire generations to come.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to the Kargil heroes. In his message, he honoured the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while defending India’s borders and said the nation would always remain indebted to their courage, bravery, and selfless service.
As India marks 27 years of the Kargil victory, the memories of Operation Vijay continue to remind the nation of the price paid by its soldiers to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
