Indian Army’s Spear Corps Conducts Orientation Programme for IFS Officer Trainees

IFS Trainees Get First-Hand Exposure to Border Operations During Indian Army Programme
Indian Masterminds Stories

In an effort to deepen understanding between diplomats and the armed forces, the Indian Army organised a five-day orientation programme for trainees of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). The initiative was conducted by the Dao Division under the Spear Corps from March 2 to 6, 2026, providing future diplomats with first-hand exposure to the operational environment and challenges faced by soldiers stationed along India’s borders.

Exposure to Frontline Operations

During the programme, IFS trainees visited forward areas under the division’s jurisdiction, where they interacted with soldiers and officers serving in sensitive border regions. These visits offered the trainees valuable insights into the strategic importance of these areas and the role played by the Army in safeguarding the nation’s frontiers.

Senior officers briefed the participants on various aspects of border management, including security arrangements, operational readiness, and the complex logistics involved in maintaining military units in remote and challenging terrain.

Understanding Army Training and Preparedness

The orientation also included demonstrations and training exercises conducted by Army personnel. These sessions showcased the rigorous preparation, discipline, and operational skills required for soldiers deployed in high-altitude and strategically important sectors.

Through these demonstrations, the IFS trainees gained a clearer understanding of the challenges faced by the armed forces while protecting the country’s territorial integrity.

Celebrating Holi with Troops

Beyond the formal sessions, the trainees also took part in Holi celebrations with the soldiers. The event included cultural and recreational activities that allowed the trainees to interact with troops in an informal setting.

This interaction helped foster camaraderie and offered the future diplomats a glimpse into the human side of military life, highlighting the resilience, morale, and dedication of soldiers serving in remote locations.

Strengthening Civil–Military Understanding

The orientation programme emphasized the importance of stronger coordination and understanding between diplomats and the armed forces. By witnessing the operational realities of the Army, the trainees gained valuable perspectives on defence and security matters that will be relevant in their future diplomatic roles.

Such initiatives are intended to equip IFS officers with practical insights that can support informed decision-making during international engagements and strategic discussions.

Valedictory Session and Future Cooperation

The programme concluded with a valedictory session, during which the trainees expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn directly from frontline personnel. They acknowledged the crucial role played by the Indian Army in protecting the country’s borders and maintaining national security.

The initiative forms part of the Army’s broader efforts to promote cooperation and mutual understanding between civilian administrators, diplomats, and the armed forces, ensuring that officers from different services gain a comprehensive perspective on defence operations and strategic challenges.
