Ranchi: In a major welfare initiative, the Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) has introduced a life insurance scheme worth ₹5 lakh for thousands of contractual teachers and education workers across the state.

The move aims to strengthen social security for employees working under the School Education Department, including those engaged in residential schools and academic support roles.

Coverage for 8,525 Teachers and Education Workers

Under the new scheme, a total of 8,525 employees will be covered, including:

  • Teachers and staff of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas
  • Jharkhand Balika Residential Schools
  • Block Resource Persons (BRP) and Cluster Resource Persons (CRP)
  • Resource teachers and other academic support staff

The scheme will also include contractual employees working across various education programs.

Scheme to Be Implemented Through LIC

The insurance plan will be operated through the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Life Insurance Corporation of India). The School Education and Literacy Department has already begun the implementation process.

District authorities have been directed to collect consent from eligible employees and send proposals by June 25 to ensure timely rollout of the policy.

₹500 Monthly Contribution from Employees

Under the scheme:

  • Each employee will contribute ₹500 per month from salary or honorarium
  • Payment options will include monthly, half-yearly, or annual contributions
  • The government believes this structure will provide long-term financial security to employees and their families

₹5 Lakh Benefit in Case of Death

The scheme includes a life cover of ₹5 lakh, which will be provided to the nominee or family members in case of death during service.

If an employee completes service or retires normally, the accumulated contribution will be returned along with interest. The scheme also offers an estimated interest rate of 7.5% on deposited amounts.

Strong Social Security Push for Education Workforce

The initiative aims to enhance financial protection for thousands of workers engaged in Jharkhand’s education system. The government expects the scheme to provide stability and support to families dependent on contractual and support staff roles.

About the Scheme

The life insurance initiative covers employees from over 200 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and 57 Jharkhand Balika Residential Schools, along with nearly 3,000 BRP-CRP staff and hundreds of other education workers, extending social security benefits to more than 8,000 personnel across the state.
