Ranchi: The Central Government has approved a ₹214.79 crore road strengthening and redevelopment project for the Ranchi–Mahulia (Tata) stretch of National Highway-33, covering over 126 kilometres in Jharkhand. The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Ranchi and Jamshedpur while enhancing road safety and regional economic activity.
Major Overhaul of 126 km NH-33 Stretch
The approved project covers the Ranchi–Mahulia corridor (approximately 126.497 km), a key transport route connecting the state capital Ranchi with the industrial city of Jamshedpur.
The work will involve an overlay-based redevelopment, including:
- Milling and removal of damaged bituminous layers
- Laying of Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM)
- Application of Bituminous Concrete (BC) layers
- Structural strengthening of road sections
- Upgradation under Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards
Officials said the upgrade will improve road durability, reduce travel time, and enhance driving comfort.
Key Transport and Economic Corridor for Jharkhand
The Ranchi–Mahulia stretch is one of the most important transport corridors in the state, handling:
- Heavy commercial vehicle movement
- Passenger buses
- Mineral transportation trucks
- Inter-state freight traffic
The route also connects Jharkhand with Odisha and West Bengal, making it a critical link for trade and logistics in eastern India.
Improved Safety and Reduced Travel Time Expected
Due to heavy traffic load, monsoon damage, and ageing infrastructure, several sections of the highway have deteriorated in recent years.
The upcoming redevelopment is expected to:
- Improve road safety
- Reduce travel time between Ranchi and Jamshedpur
- Ensure smoother freight movement
- Strengthen structural capacity of the highway
Authorities said the project will make the route safer, more durable, and more efficient for daily commuters and commercial transport.
Project Awarded to Infrastructure Firm; Work to Begin Soon
The construction work has been awarded to M/s SRSC Infra Pvt. Ltd., Mathura, in two packages. The execution will follow strict quality control measures and Indian Roads Congress specifications.
The foundation stone (bhoomi pujan) for the project is scheduled for June 18, after which construction work will begin.
Strong Political Support and Public Relief
Ranchi MP and Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth welcomed the approval and described it as a major relief for commuters traveling between Ranchi and Jamshedpur.
He said the upgraded highway will ensure safer, smoother, and more convenient travel while also strengthening industrial and trade movement in the region.
Boost to Regional Trade and Industrial Growth
The Ranchi–Mahulia corridor plays a vital role in transporting minerals, industrial goods, and commercial freight. Officials believe the upgraded highway will:
- Strengthen Jharkhand’s industrial logistics network
- Improve interstate connectivity with Odisha and West Bengal
- Support faster movement of goods and services
- Boost regional economic development
The ₹214.79 crore approval for upgrading the Ranchi–Mahulia highway marks a significant infrastructure push in Jharkhand. Once completed, the project is expected to transform a heavily used transport corridor into a safer, faster, and more reliable route, supporting both daily commuters and the state’s growing industrial economy.
