Assam: NHPC Limited has achieved a major milestone in the development of its flagship 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, with the successful boxing-up of Unit 5 (250 MW) on June 14, 2026. With this development, the commissioned capacity of the project has increased to 1250 MW across five units, marking steady progress toward full commissioning.
Unit 5 Successfully Boxed-Up in Presence of NHPC CMD
The boxing-up of Unit 5 was completed in the presence of NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta, who reviewed the progress at the project site located across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
The completion indicates that the unit is structurally ready for the next phase of testing and commissioning activities.
Each generating unit of the project has a capacity of 250 MW, and the latest achievement adds another key milestone to India’s largest ongoing hydropower development.

Project Progress: 5 Out of 8 Units Completed
With the completion of Unit 5, the overall progress of the Subansiri Lower project is as follows:
- Total project capacity: 2000 MW

- Total commissioned capacity: 1250 MW
Once fully operational, the project will significantly enhance hydroelectric power generation in the Northeast region.
