New Delhi: The Ladies’ Bar Rooms for women lawyers proposal by the supreme court has sparked a nationwide discussion on gender-friendly infrastructure in Indian courts. The Court observed that women advocates need proper facilities such as private bar rooms, clean washrooms, changing areas, and safe spaces to work effectively.

The bench emphasized that dignity, privacy, and equal participation in the legal profession cannot be achieved without adequate infrastructure for women lawyers.

Why Is the Supreme Court Discussing Ladies’ Bar Rooms

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by women advocates from different parts of India regarding the lack of basic facilities in court complexes. The Court noted that many courts still do not have dedicated spaces for women lawyers despite the growing number of female advocates entering the profession.

Key Issues Raised by Women Advocates

Women lawyers highlighted several challenges:

  • Absence of dedicated ladies’ bar rooms
  • Lack of privacy in court premises
  • Inadequate washroom facilities
  • No changing or resting rooms
  • Safety and accessibility concerns
  • Financial struggles faced by junior advocates

The petition argued that these problems create barriers for women seeking long-term careers in law.

Ladies’ Bar Rooms: Supreme Court Says Basic Facilities Are Linked to Dignity

The bench observed that providing essential facilities to women advocates is not merely an administrative matter. According to the Court, it is directly connected to the constitutional guarantee of dignity under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

What Is Article 21?

Article 21 guarantees:

  • Right to life
  • Right to personal liberty
  • Right to live with dignity

The Court emphasized that women lawyers spend long hours inside court premises and therefore require safe, hygienic, and comfortable working conditions.

What Are Ladies’ Bar Rooms

Ladies’ Bar Rooms are dedicated spaces inside court complexes designed specifically for women advocates. These facilities may include:

  • Private seating areas
  • Clean washrooms
  • Changing rooms
  • Rest areas
  • Secure storage facilities
  • Basic workplace amenities

Such infrastructure helps create a more inclusive and professional environment for women in the legal sector.

Supreme Court Suggests Dedicated Ladies’ Bar Rooms Across India

The Court proposed establishing dedicated Ladies’ Bar Rooms in courts across the country. The move aims to:

  • Improve working conditions for women advocates
  • Promote gender equality in the legal profession
  • Increase accessibility for women lawyers
  • Ensure privacy and safety
  • Encourage greater participation of women in litigation practice

Legal experts believe this could become a major step toward making Indian courts more gender-inclusive.

Financial Support for Young Lawyers Also Under Consideration

During the hearing, the Supreme Court also discussed the financial challenges faced by young advocates. The bench suggested examining the possibility of creating a support mechanism or statutory fund for junior lawyers, particularly first-generation advocates who often struggle financially during the initial years of practice.

Potential Benefits of Financial Assistance

A support fund could:

  • Reduce economic barriers
  • Help talented graduates enter the legal profession
  • Support first-generation lawyers
  • Improve diversity within the legal ecosystem
  • Strengthen access to justice
