Bihar’s ₹5,000 Crore Game-Changer: Kacchi Dargah-Bidupur 6-Lane Bridge Nears Completion

Patna: Bihar is set to witness a major infrastructure milestone as the Kacchi Dargah-Bidupur 6-lane bridge over the Ganga nears completion. Built at an estimated cost of around Rs 5,000 crore, the mega project is expected to ease traffic congestion in Patna and improve connectivity between South and North Bihar.

The bridge, being constructed under the Road Construction Department through the Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL), stretches around 9.76 kilometres and stands on 67 pillars. Including its approach roads, the overall project length reaches approximately 19.30 kilometres.

Direct Link Between North and South Bihar

The Kacchi Dargah-Bidupur bridge will provide a direct and smoother route between Patna and Samastipur, along with improved access to several parts of North Bihar.

The new connection is expected to reduce travel time and improve the movement of people and goods between the two regions. It could also strengthen commercial activity by making transportation of agricultural produce and other goods more efficient.

Major Relief for Patna Traffic

The bridge is expected to play an important role in reducing traffic pressure on existing routes in and around Patna.

Pankaj Kumar Pal, Secretary of the Road Construction Department, described the project as an important part of Bihar’s infrastructure development. According to the department, easier movement of commercial vehicles will support local trade and improve the transportation network.

The project is also expected to strengthen Patna’s links with major roads and surrounding areas, creating an important connectivity corridor for the state capital.

Connection With Patna Ring Road

The mega bridge will also help connect the Patna Ring Road with the Amas-Darbhanga route, further expanding its strategic importance.

The wider connectivity network will cover key locations including:

  • Danapur, Digha and Shivala
  • Bihta, Kanhauli and Dumri
  • Nayagaon, Telwarichak and Sabalpur
  • Kacchi Dargah and surrounding areas

This network is expected to improve access to different parts of Patna while strengthening links with other major districts.

19.30-Km Infrastructure Corridor

The main bridge covers about 9.76 kilometres, while the total length of the project, including approach roads, is around 19.30 kilometres.

With 67 pillars supporting the structure, the project represents a significant engineering undertaking for Bihar. The bridge uses an extradosed cable bridge design, combining elements of conventional girder and cable-stayed bridge technology.

Boost to Trade and Agriculture

Beyond reducing travel time, the bridge could have a wider economic impact. Faster road connectivity can make it easier for farmers and traders to transport agricultural products between North and South Bihar.

Improved movement of commercial vehicles may also support businesses located along the connected routes and improve access to markets.

A New Connectivity Hub for Patna

Once operational, the Kacchi Dargah-Bidupur bridge is expected to become an important part of Patna’s expanding road network. Its connection with major routes and surrounding areas could help distribute traffic more efficiently and improve regional mobility.

The project is therefore more than a river crossing. It is expected to strengthen the economic and transport links between different parts of Bihar while supporting the state’s broader infrastructure expansion.

Project at a Glance

  • Bridge length: 9.76 km
  • Total project length: 19.30 km, including approach roads
  • Project cost: Around Rs 5,000 crore
  • Number of pillars: 67
  • Bridge type: Extradosed cable bridge

The nearing completion of the Kacchi Dargah-Bidupur 6-lane bridge marks an important step in Bihar’s road infrastructure development. By improving connectivity, easing traffic pressure and supporting commercial movement, the project is expected to contribute to stronger regional integration and economic activity across the state.
