Kuno National Park: A historic milestone has been achieved in India’s Project Cheetah as the cheetah population in the country surpassed 50. Namibian cheetah Jwala gave birth to five cubs, bringing the total number of cheetahs in India to 53, with 33 Indian-born cubs thriving across the nation.

Project Cheetah Achieves Major Milestone

India’s ambitious cheetah reintroduction project reached a significant landmark on Monday when Jwala, a Namibian-born cheetah, delivered five healthy cubs at Kuno National Park in Sheopur district, Madhya Pradesh. This marks the 10th successful cheetah litter on Indian soil and highlights the growing success of wildlife conservation efforts in India.

CM Mohan Yadav Hails Wildlife Conservation Success

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav expressed delight at the milestone, calling it a proud moment for wildlife conservation. He shared on X (formerly Twitter):

“Good news from Kuno National Park! Cheetah Jwala has given birth to 5 cubs, marking another major milestone for Project Cheetah. With this, India’s cheetah population has crossed the half-century mark, reaching 53. A proud moment for wildlife conservation and a testament to the success of India’s cheetah reintroduction efforts.”

He also commended the veterinarians, field staff, and conservation personnel whose tireless efforts have contributed to the success of the project.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav Applauds the Achievement

Union Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav described the development as a historic achievement. He highlighted that Jwala has become a successful third-time mother and emphasized the importance of this milestone for India’s cheetah conservation journey.

“Cheetahs cross half-century! A moment of great pride for Project Cheetah as Jwala gave birth to five cubs today at Kuno National Park. With this birth, the number of Indian-born thriving cubs has risen to 33, marking the 10th successful cheetah litter on Indian soil.”

About Project Cheetah

Launched on September 17, 2022, Project Cheetah is India’s world-first intercontinental translocation initiative. The project aims to reintroduce the cheetah to India, which became extinct in the country in 1952. The program has been instrumental in restoring the species to its natural habitat, ensuring biodiversity conservation and strengthening India’s wildlife heritage.
