Sambalpur: Nirmal Kumar Singh has assumed charge as Director (Finance) of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), bringing more than three decades of experience in public-sector finance, accounting reforms, digitalisation and strategic decision-making.
Singh joins MCL from the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), where he served at the Bokaro Steel Plant and rose to the position of Chief General Manager. During his tenure, he handled various aspects of finance and accounts and led several initiatives to improve financial processes and strengthen accounting systems.
Nirmal Kumar Singh’s Career at SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant
Singh joined SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant as Junior Manager in June 1995. Over the years, he held positions of increasing responsibility and gained extensive experience across major functions in finance and accounts.
His key contributions at Bokaro Steel Plant include:
- Ind AS Implementation: Led the first-time implementation of Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) at the plant.
- Automated Accounting System: Conceptualised and implemented an SAP-based automated system for Ind AS-compliant accounting.
- SAP Costing Module: Worked on the implementation of the SAP Costing Module to strengthen costing and financial management processes.
- Digitalisation of Financial Operations: Contributed to the digitisation of vendor payments and cash management.
These initiatives reflect his experience in accounting reforms, technology-driven financial management and improving operational efficiency in a public-sector enterprise.

Educational Qualifications and Professional Background
Nirmal Kumar Singh has a strong academic background in accounting and finance. He graduated with honours in Accounting and Finance from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), University of Delhi, in 1990.
He subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1994.
His professional qualifications, combined with extensive experience at SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant, have equipped him with expertise in financial planning, accounting systems, cost management and strategic decision-making.
Singh’s Vision for MCL
As Director (Finance), Singh aims to strengthen MCL’s financial position and enhance its operational competitiveness. His vision is to position the company as a financially strong and efficient coal producer while creating long-term value for employees and other stakeholders.
His experience in financial management, accounting standard implementation and digital transformation is expected to support MCL’s financial and operational priorities.
